OK, I tried the 'help' section first, but so far, no joy...

I have tried, multiple times, multiple ways, to create an avatar... If one clicks on my name, and clicks on profile, there resides a photo, which is indicated as an 'avatar'. It, however, does not appear when I post... GRRRR.

If someone can figure this out I would appreciate it and give you

Thank you!

You need to go under Forum Actions> Edit Profile> Edit Avatar> Uncheck the radio button that says do not use avatar> then proceed to choose a file or a URL.> Save changes.

Ed. are you trying to link to a file from Photobucket? If so and that is not working choose a file that lives on your computer and see if that works. It mat be an issue with Pbucket. If you can choose a file from your PC go with that. I know it works because I just did it when you asked the question.

I'm pretty sure the avatar file size is limited to 100 x 100 pixels for members with upgraded memberships.

My Avatar is much bigger than 100 x 100 pixels. More like 1500 x 1200. I just changed mine to a file that is 1000 x 960 pixels.

I just tried to add your profile picture as well as your avatar. It does not show in posts but it shows on your account. Last time this happened we asked the member to clear cache and cookies and for some reason it helped.

So I do see the new photo, but no, it doesn't show as an avatar, and I zapped my cookies and cache - I'm starting to get a complex!

I'll come over to your house and fix it for you if you sell me your track bike. I work in IT and sometimes no matter what you do the solution to a tech problem does not work. Only when the stars align and it's a new moon or even better the Winter Solstice. That is tomorrow so cross your fingers.

Oh THAT'S the problem, it's a Raleigh image. The servers have a grudge against Raleigh.

There's going to be an extra charge to fix that.

Well...
I just tried it..

It worked just fine for me.

I went ahead and changed back though.

I always have troubles with PHOTOBUCKET. It does some odd stuff with the photos.

Are you using:

Option 2, Upload Image from Your Computer?

Or are you trying to link the avatar from photobucket?

Several of the admins have tried to get your avatar to show up (myself included) and no such luck. There was another member whose avatar would show a picture of robots no matter what photo he tried to post; it was some sort of software issue. I will forward your issue to the tech people at IB.

email me the pic tom(at)bikeforums(dot)net and I'll see what I can do for you. My software will resize to limits, etc.

eDIT: Choose another Raleigh image. That one has DRM coding in it (Digital Rights Management), that prevents it from being used.

Are they putting that in photos now?

As noted above, I downloaded the photo from the link above to my computer, then uploaded and it seemed to work in my profile (see screenshot). I think ended up with a 7.0 kb file (7154b) which seems to be the same as the original.

I'm not seeing anything in the file that suggests encryption (other than photobucket trapping direct links)

Is there a better format that doesn't support encryption? GIF? PNG?

If the image has rights management features or needs resizing, that is your issue to solve. Photo editing software is out there and even free. Windows has Paint built in and the version in Windows 7-up is fairly excellent for cropping, resizing and other basic functions if you don't need to adjust the contrast or color balance...

If you cannot right click, capture the page with the screenshot hotkeys (Ctrl+Alt+Print Screen keys in Windows and however you do it on Apple stuff) and paste them in to edit the image).

One more thing I seem to notice a lot is how people are dumbfounded when their phone images have a lot of trouble uploading or appearing quickly. When asked they often casually reply it's some huge thing like 2500x1900 pixels and over 3 MEGABYTES. THERE'S YOUR SIGN. That's not working for most-cut the filesize and resolution down to jpeg levels.

Note that CliffordK (a few posts above) was able to 'use' the image (the Raleigh Ilkeston photo). The poster photo of the woman on a Raleigh bike was substituted by someone into my profile. I've not bothered to change it back.
