Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike Preferences That Change with Time

Last summer I bought a Emonda SL6 as a second bike (my other is a high end in the mid 90's, EL/OS Nivacrom steel framed Bianchi with upgraded Chorus Groupset and new wheels/seat/seatpost/handlebars - not much left, I guess). See

followed by

When I got the Emonda I really liked the ride and the feel and pretty much only rode that bike. On the rare occasion that I would get on the Bianchi it felt a bit awkward and unnatural. Earlier this week I dropped the Emonda off for service and yesterday was my first Bianchi ride in at least 6 months. I have no idea what has happened here, but suddenly I really liked the Bianchi. It felt good "under my butt", it had handling characteristics that I suddenly liked.. it just felt 'natural' to me. My reaction was totally different than getting on it last year after months of riding the Emonda. It is to the point that I can imagine splitting my bike time between the 2 bikes.

It is only one ride (today got rained out), so maybe I will 'come to my senses' when the weather clears and I get back on the road. But the difference in my reactions to the same bike (just different times) was quite surprising to me. It is to the point that I might consider 'sacrificing around one pound" and riding the Bianchi at Six Gap next year (got Covid'ed out this year). There is something about a really old guy ()DOB 1949) riding a classic bike (while wearing a $2000 knee brace contraption).
