SunTour Power Shifters ratchet slipping

Hi,

I have a set of power shifters. They look like these, except stem shifters. On one side the ratchet is slipping. If I loosen them enough so the ratchet does not slip, there is not enough friction to hold the derailuer. I've taken it apart and put it back together, with the same results. Is there any thing I can do? Or just toss them?

Thanks in advance.

Give them a thorough cleaning with solvent and then a light lube with Park grease.

Wait a second, hold the phone. If you loosen them enough? Eh? No, no, no. Tighten them down. Just enough to hold in place when you shift, and then maybe another 1/8 turn for good luck. If this doesn't work, replace your cable assemblies and clean and lube your mechs-- which you should be doing at least once a year anyhow.

If I tighten it just enough to hold in place:
when I pull in cable - works fine, ratchets properly
when I try to release cable - skips over teeth on the ratchet

If I loosen slightly it will not skip over teeth when I release cable, but the friction is not sufficient to hold it in place.

Cables and housing are new. I'll try cleaning the shifter with some mineral spirits, and re-lube.

Hi,
Are you sure you got them back together correctly? Here's a link to mine that I took apart and photoed disassembled. It's at the end of the thread.
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ve-as-is/page2

There's a site that has a catalog photo of their assemble order, but I can't think of it now.
Found the pic.

Here's the link to this illustration on the VeloBase.com webpage.

Sounds like the ratchet is flipped the wrong way. It should only ratchet when you pull.

Ratcheting wheel was the wrong way! Didn't know it had a sawtooth profile. Also, the washers were not in the right order. Thanks for the assemble order. Washers were wrong on the other side too, fixed that. Someone really messed these up, but they work perfect now. Thanks.

If you're curious, these are for my wife's 85 Miyata 210 mixte.

Thanks for this thread! I am just about to swap out a pair of straight friction shifters for SunTour Power Shifters (circa late '70s) on my touring bike! This will make it the third C&V bike in my "stable" with them. SunTour Power Shifters are my personal favorite for my 30+ year old bikes! Voncarlos' pix were the perfect memory refresher.

Background on the bike:
Bought about 3 years ago at a garage sale for $15. Was mostly original except that it had a stem extension on it, w/ the stem shifters. Looks like someone had got real exited with reflector stickers and nail polish.

At the time I didn't know much about wrenching on bikes, and was scared of cables and derailleurs, so converted it to a single speed. The inner chainring bolts rounded out when I removed them, also I used the original RD on another bike.

Now I wanted to put it back to geared. Got a new (to me) RD on ebay. Problem was no one had the inner chainring bolts for the crank. It's an SR w/ smaller bolts. I decided to use the original middle 45t as an outer, and get a 34t 110bcd for the inner. I used a Suntour Vx FD I had laying around, because the original one was for a triple. I also got a new Shimano 7 speed freewheel. Everything came out great, shifters are magic. (I had a Fuji S12-S before with shifters like these)

Need to redo the finishing tape.

SunTour Vx FD
SR "Signature" 165 110/74 Cranks
Original middle 45t used as outer
New Sugino 34t 110 for inner
74 BCD not used
Shimano UN 54 BB (original loose-ball was pitted)

New Shimano 7sp 14-28 freewheel
Shimano RD-M330 off ebay

Great SunTour Power ratcheting shifters

Triple butted cromo frame Manganese steel fork

Nice Dia-Compe levers

Interesting mixte cable routing for rear cantis

Cool. You don't see too many mixtes with cantilevers.

Mine are doing the same thing, figured I assembled it incorrectly - time for me to take them apart again and try to put my brain in gear when I reassemble this time.

Nice!

Cantis are rare on a Mixte. There is a Mixte picture thread bouncing around. Should be easy to find. Throw that up on it when you get a chance.

That's cool cable routing for the rear brake, but it'd bother the hell out of me not having a barrell adjuster!

I just found this thread after scratching my head all weekend about why my rear shifter was failing me. I recently bought an '84 Repco Superlite and have spent hours restoring all the parts/removing the rust and grease, etc. Finally took it to my LBS and had new cables fitted, bearings greased - everything running like it's brand new. Except the rear shifter was jumping! My mechanic couldn't figure it out and neither could I, we were thinking the spring on the deraillieur was too strong, the cables not strong enough, the shifter paddles worn out...tossed around a lot of options. And no success. And then this thread...pulled apart the shifters and there it was - when I cleaned them up I put the 1/4mm saw tooth ratchet back on the wrong way! Can't say how grateful I am for this advice! Very happy indeed

You can see why almost nobody makes a mixte anymore. They must cost a fortune with all that tubing and lugs. Very nice bike. Your wife is one lucky lady. Great job

I just found this thread when I decided to rebuild a pair of power shifters and after taking them apart no ratcheting saw the post by VonCarlos put them back together from the blow up and voila it works.
But my question is has anyone tried mounting them on Braze on shifter posts?

Thanks for any ideas

No, but I'm going to guess that they would fit on SunTour braze-ons, which as I recall were different from Shimano and Campy braze-ons (but I don't remember for sure). Maybe this will nudge someone who actually knows to post, and straighten us out here.
