I got "horned" four times today!
First was a d-bag in a pickup.
Second was a d-bag in a two-seater convertible.
Third was a d-bag in a minivan.
Fourth was a goose. That one I didn't mind.

Horn honks don't always indicate impatience or anger. In some cultures it's considered polite to honk before/while passing, notably some busy cities in India where commercial and passenger vehicles have signs on the rear *asking* drivers to honk before passing to alert the driver.
One of my neighbors honks whenever he sees me. He's just saying "Hi!"
I grew up in and near NYC where everybody honked all the time. After awhile you just ignore it.
When I moved back to Texas as a teenager and got my learner's permit my granddad warned me to never again honk at another driver for any reason (I did, once). In the 1970s in Texas honking was tantamount to daring someone to fight or shoot. But times have changed. Weatherford, to the west of me, used to be a friendly rural market town. Now it's the honkingest country town I know of in Texas. Even on a Sunday drivers have become so impatient they'll lean on the horn the instant the light changes to green. And it's not "foreigners." It's locals in pickups.
As long as they don't brush-by pass me or try to hit me I don't care.

Did a 30 mile ride today......towards the end, I had a teenager hanging out of window, (car came up from behind) and he screamed just feet away from me as the car past. Really startled me. Why do people treat others like this, I will never understand it.

A goose honking at you is no big deal. It's when they hiss at you that you need to be careful.
With cars and pickup trucks, there are so many possible reasons why a driver might honk, and we'd really have to get inside the head of every one of the drivers who do this. I'm not interested in defending the 95%* of them that honk unnecessarily.
More interesting, I think, is the question of whether (a) all cyclists get honked at the same amount, or (b) some cyclists get honked at a lot more than others. I'm pretty sure the answer there is (b).
The next question, then, is the same question but restricted geographically. In a given area, do some cyclists hear more honking than others? I'm pretty sure this is the case. That means that there are drivers who honk at one cyclist but not another. I'm somewhat interested in getting inside the heads of those drivers.

One driver honked at the guy I was riding with, passed him, and then yelled at me, something to the effect that I should instruct my riding buddy to ride closer to the edge of the road. Near the end of my ride yesterday in a very low traffic neighborhood next to mine I had a BMW creep up on me, and once right behind me lean on the horn. Startled the heck out of me. I had looked behind me just moments earlier, and nothing was there, so he must have come out of a driveway or side street. Some people have no patience, nor politeness at all. A slight tap on the horn would have sufficed.

A blonde in a convertible Camaro passed me yesterday, doing about 60 in a 45 zone, but she gave a good 20-foot margin. The minivan was about two feet away, and I was as far to the right as I could be. I really need to install the rear view mirrors I got for Christmas, so I can keep an eye on the enemy.
In SC traffic regulations for bicycles state to “ride as far to the right as practicable,” which I try to do. The roads I frequent were once strictly rural, but urban sprawl here has brought more and more traffic, and poorer drivers!

Op I empathize, however getting horned isn’t as bad as someone throwing a can of green beans at you. I still think I’m lucky their aim sucked . A 15 ounce can of green beans might have took me down ..
