1986 Schwinn High Sierra seat post?
Is there a standard size for these late-80s mtbs seat posts? Does anyone know what size this bike would take?
Found a near mint tan and brown High sierra this week. I'll post pics after it gets a quick clean up!
thanks

For whatever it's worth, my 87 High Sierra is a 26.0 post...

I always seem to be in this situation. I do think the 86 and 87 high sierras were different. Mine is tig welded without the braised head tube.
I'll have to check one more time to see if there is any way to read the size off of it, but I doubt it. I guess before I buy I'll have to bring it to the LBS and have them measure it.

I can totally be wrong here- but I thought the hallmark of the 86 and later High Sierras was the fillet brazed head tube- with the 86 Cimarron being the "flagship" mtn bike with a Fillet Brazed front end and lugged rear end- High Sierra with the FB front end and welded rear and then Sierra, etc...

The 86 catalog lists the high sierra as "cro-mo tri-caliber" and it's tig welded. It came in either bronze or "ivory" (which is really two-tone brown). I think the 87/88s were the fillet brazed. I wish this one was, but it still seems like a solid frame. anyone know what "tri-caliber" means?

Mine has the "tri caliber" logo on it down by the BB
The Ivory ones I've seen are white with the rear triangle being black- pretty much the same decals as mine...

The '86 ATB catalog specs list the High Sierra seatpost as 26mm, so I guess the source for Sheldon's data was incorrect.

I just ordered a 26.2 seatpost! We'll see when it gets here. I'm planning to add bigger more modern tires and overhaul the brakes (maybe some smaller levers) and just ride it as a off road bike. My last vintage mtb just got turned into a utility bike so it was good timing.

Old post, but I needed confirmation on what was seeing with my 1986 High Sierra.
Sheldon's page says 26.2, but when I measured this with my calipers, mine's at 26mm, actually right around 25.95, give or take a hundredth of mm along it's length. So, I'm glad I measured instead of taking Sheldon's page at value.
Here's pic of my seat post with the decals (prior to it going to the powdercoaters)

friday1970 Yes, I had a High Sierra same year as yours (different colorway) and it takes a 26.0 seatpost. I had a nice American Classic post in mine before I sold it.
