Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think there's an app in Twitter that automatically deletes old posts. Not sure if BF is that high tech.

If you rode without an odometer, would your body start telling you when at 33 2/3?

Y'all seem to like short rides by my standards. At COTA I get done about 40 because of running out of time before bed; on weekend rides in the summer we have routes of 56-69 miles, and those are good.

Garrison, ND, the self-proclaimed Walleye Capital of the World at the end of the weeklong CANDISC, 2006 edition. A week before I had done the Bont Ton Roulet, which is another weeklong ride, only in the Finger Lakes area. I was in beast mode.

Kudos. A bunch of my club-mates sometimes do the BonTon Roulet.

The biggest obstacle for me is going to be time, and that's primarily because of family goings on. I would imagine that others have similar constraints. You're at a distinct advantage with no dependants and a spouse that rides with you - count your blessings.

This. I was thinking it's time and age. But it CAN'T be age, can it?

Hmmmm. Age is keeping me from upping my power by 50% or so, which is keeping me from traveling an additional ~2 miles each hour, which is making my average ride distance seem wimpy. I dunno - does that work?

Nah - it must be the bike that's slowing me down. I should buy a new, faster one.

I did it again 2014. One thing I don't like about it these days is that, to appeal to changing demographics, they try to stay in towns where there are schools so people can opt for dorm lodging. They often go to such a town and stay two nights, with a loop ride on the no-move day. That sort of limits the places you can visit and stay. In 2006 we moved every day except the rest day in Watkins Glen. There were motels there, but other than that, I don't recall staying anywhere where there was large scale indoor opportunities.

Oh, yes absolutely. It sounded like you guys were saying that was what you liked to do though, not that you'd do more if you had time.

Maybe I needed more coffee.

Truth. This is why real miles are reserved for weekends at the moment. Though I am scheming doing a double of a 21-ish mile route this weekend just to see how I can do over 40 miles in anticipation for the 35-ish gravel ride I have in, dang, less than 2 weeks now.
