I went on a group ride for the first time in ages last week. Everyone was older than me. Everyone was also faster than I am.

I have done it now 40 years and always did a little bit of cycling. 10 years ago I got much more serious into riding as it was different and I was doing ok. I manage to do both pretty good till about 2012 and at age 51 my running went really slow. I was then training at 8:45 to 9 minute pace most of the time. Then my legs just lost the balance or form and I have drop to now training at 10:30-12 minute pace. That is ridiculously slow considering I am in pretty decent shape. The pace never bothers me running by my legs and form seem all messed up. I feel like I am crawling. On the bike though after 10 years since 2008 of hitting it steady I am about where I was then. I am not necessary stronger or faster in sprints but maybe better with bike handling and how to ride.

I actually wonder if I have some weird neuro problem as my balance and running is not right. I cannot complain I have no pain I just have to stop and walk at times and my legs just do not want to pick up. Put me on a bike and I start spinning and moving free. Could be specificity of training or that after 80000 lifetime miles running I have pounded them down. Problem is I know other runners with more than 50000 miles lifetime and they do not have my slow down curve. I don't know but nothing nice hard 1 hour run, or a good 40 miler on a bike. I don't want to give either up.
A guy I work with is a long-time runner but he just wants to run 10 minute pace now, no desire for any faster than that. He just likes running. I think for a lot of people it's just the wear over the years, but since I started less than 2 years ago I'm still improving. But I never feel like a long ride when I've had an 8-10 mile run on the weekend, so I'm slowing down at least on everything more than 40 miles.

Avoid orthopedic injuries, and if you have to get internal fixations, take them out when you are done.
