Hello, a friend recommended this site to me. Mostly taking up biking for exercise, though it'll be refreshing to ride around town instead of drive.
I suppose my first question would be about what sort of tools I should have for general maintenance. (I'm still looking for a bike to get, so anything that's specific to a particular kind will have to wait. Though I'd be using it mostly on pavement and bare dirt.)
(I would assume my question belongs in Bike Mechanics, but to be honest, I added the question because my intro felt so sparse without it.)

Welcome to Bike Forums.
Not awkward. But, you're correct. Best to ask tool questions in the Mechanics forum.

1. Keep your chain oiled
2. Keep your tires pumped up
And it it ain't broke, leave it alone as long as you can resist.
Welcome, and good luck!

I would get yourself about 3 sets of metric Allen wrenches, I use those the most, and am CONSTANTLY losing them. Those would be a great start. As well as some chain lube and tire pump. My main 2 bike maintenance rules are:
1. Keep your chain oiled
2. Keep your tires pumped up
And it it ain't broke, leave it alone as long as you can resist.

I agree!!!!! I check my tire pressure everyday. Lube my chain weekly and depending on riding conditions, clean and re-lube my chain monthly.

3,4,5, and 6mm Allen wrenches should cover your needs. I've found that plastic tire irons break easily, so IMO it pays to buy a pair with metal cores.
