Onga Saminya Lo.
Eye.
I am not in Africa now, but I was in Dangmeland in Ghana and I rode my own fixed gear conversion whi8le I was their. My friends all loved it and I gave it away. It's still being used. I had so many people offer to buy it from me.
I liked bikeing in Africa, i'd love to do a west africa trip by bike or something. Great place...

Mzungu, I'm not lost in Florida... I'm losing my mind to cycling... having too much fun.
Looking forward to going back home to Nairobi sometime in 2008. Get a bicycle and go around the old haunts. And have plenty of Tusker.

hey more afrikaans,
lekker!
The shoppe here that sold biltong, wors, mrs balls etc. closed up. I am seriously depressed.
There are a few mail order places where you can get all the essentials.
DbCoil https://store.fastcommerce.com/home_s...ricanfood.html has fresh wors so you
can have a lekker braii.
There are some mail order firms that have biltong, I'll post them as soon as I find the links.
TexasFietser, where do you stay in texas? I'm in DFW area.

Boertjie.... how much contact have you had out of your posting? We are a "off road" bunch that rides in Jhb on Saturday am. Generally to avoid the f....king taxis, but have discover a new menace in bush hijackings, so there is safety in numbers. What has cycling become, or as they say in the classics..."africa is not for sissies!!!"

hey boet,
Haven't had much contact.
I always figured that off road would be safer, at least in Gauteng.
I would have loved to cyclo tour through the Drakensberg (sic?)
and along the garden route. eh, maybe next time, no?

Are you still in SA? and where to you cycle?
We enter the odd off road race, (SABIE Classic, Karoo to Coast, Sani to sea...) but most of the time is good old fun with the manne... with the a few laughs when we hit the gravel. So we get some exercise spend time with boytjies who stick together no matter how tough it gets....

Suid Afrikaans? Wel, nog een beetje!
While I've never been to SA, am from Europe and speak Flemish and Dutch (among others) which have great similarities to Suid-Afrikaans.
Had the opportunity while serving in the USAF during the Korean 'police action' to become friends with a bunch of SouthAfs in the SAAF and they were surprised a GI knew their SouthAf songs and language that they made me an honorary member of the 2nd South African Air Force Squadron.
They were some of the best and most daring pilots I've ever met. They were then flying P-51s (WWII vintage prop jobs) and later ended up flying F-86 Sabers (jets).
Recall one of their jet jockeys that scored a MIG kill buzzing the airfield (K-55/Osan) upside down trying to burn the flag off the flagpole(!) . . . and breaking the sound barrier while doing it. Yup, he got a dressing down and wasn't allowed to fly for a day.
While the Dutch and English settled the country, apartheid was not worse than what the Americans did here to the native Indians and slavery. Not nice in either case but real.
In regards to the El Tour de Tucson, have ridden it 25 times. A great ride, but at age 76 no longer fo the 109 milers! My wife, Kay, has ridden that event 15 times on our tandem with me.
Tot ziens!
