I'll bet that the Chinese company is reeling from the loss of your business. You and Pollyanna keep dreaming and we'll see what happens.

I'll bring up one more factoid and its partially based on a photo of a gang of batteries being charged. All the identifiable batteries were silverfish style.

As batteries age their internal resistance goes up and makes them harder to charge and, of course, That causes excess heat and possible disasterous failures.

5 years ago we didnt have all these fires. Of course there were a few here and there. I surmise the batteries failing are the older ones that are years past their useful life.

Of course NONE of these incidents have any details to point us toward actual cause. Its easier to run around like chicken little shouting the batteries are on fire!

This advice comes from the Consumer Products Safety Commission:
CPSC recommends these tips to prevent fires with these devices:
  • Always be present when charging devices using lithium-ion batteries. Never charge them while sleeping.
  • Only use the charger that came with your device.
  • Only use an approved replacement battery pack.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper charging and unplug the device when done.
  • Never use an e-mobility device with a battery pack that has been modified/reworked by unqualified personnel or with re-purposed or used cells
  • NEVER throw lithium batteries into the trash or general recycling. Instead, take them to your local battery recycler or hazardous waste collection center.
Source: Micromobility: E-Bikes, E-Scooters and Hoverboards

As far as problems at endless sphere. There are a lot of people repurposing batteries, building their own, and running things on the ragged edge on that site. I am not going to say that there are no problems. However, I have stayed quite fire free with several ebikes.

Anyone interested in the cooperation Chinese companies CAN provide might want to read about TureClos. This company produced a helmet that failed CPSC standards. However when asked to recall them or provide remedies to purchasers, they basically said to the CPSC "Shove it".

I suspect most of these NYC battery fires has to do with folks who modify their OEM batteries for more capacity or more voltage.
Seems to me unlikely that battery manufacturers would provide OEM batteries that have high risk of catching fire; that doesn't serve their business.
Even with new/more regulation, how do you prevent folks from playing home electricians and modifying their OEM batteries?
