Replacing stem for a '23 Giant Defy
Hi all,
I need to change stems after a fit. The Giant website is confusing and internet searches lead to more questions. I believe my bike is an "OD". Does that just mean it's a 1-1/4" diameter (as opposed to 1-1/8")? So far, I have found Zipp and FSA. There are some threads on the internet that say Zipp is a direct fit (as opposed to shaving the spacers to fit). Anyone have any advice or first hand experience? Thoughts on Zipp vs FSA? Whatever I chose, I will be pairing it w/ a handlebar too. Thanks!

I would go ZIPP personally but I have run ZIPP stuff for years with no issues. Giant uses odd stuff like that all the time because they want you to know you belong to us and we don't care about you. Weird proprietary seat posts and rack mount and oversized steerertubes. It is really odd they make a lot of great bikes for a lot of different companies and most of that doesn't have the same oddities but for their own stuff they are like "We gotta stand out from the pack by offering something that makes upgrades harder because that is what customers want!"
My favorite road bar is the Zipp Service Course SL-70 Ergo my only qualm is I wish the XPLR bars had come out a few years earlier and maybe were a touch wider a 48 or 50 would be pretty nice in that same bar in XPLR version. Not a huge deal the bikes I would be swapping bars on don't get as much riding (and not because of the handlebars) so I will wait.

No Giants probably would never own one. Have seen some vintage ones that are a little cooler and maybe there is some domestic Taiwan stuff that is neater but Giant has never wowed me in many ways.

So based on this information here , can I assume that it is an "OD" and a 1-1/8" steerer? If you click on the "Over Drive" button under "Techs and Features", it comes up with some crazy numbers, upper and lower, etc. That's where the confusion mostly comes in.
