Patina keep-up
I have visible surface rust on my 50-year-old Schwinn and I really like the natural patina of the frame in general; do not want to repaint it. What are some recommendations to keep the rust from going much further, without sanding/grinding?

There's a product called "owatrol", I've never used it, but it sounds like it would get you where you want to be.

For a natural product I have used boiled linseed oil before (BLO). It is an old school preservative method used in air frames. Clean bike, coat thinly, let dry. When dry it creates a protective layer.
This bike has had the treatment. I liked the graphics and wanted to preserve "as is".
Before
Part of the learning curve for me was to not overdo the BLO coats. Here you can see the eventual shine but also some runs in the head tube from the too thick oil coat which pooled when hanging to dry. I rewetted it and removed the wrinkles.

I used very fine steel wool on my ItalVega and it removed some paint with the rust but I like the look of the chrome poking through. I just used a light wax and nothing has come back rust wise in over 8 months. Joe
