Tennis shoes and cycling shoes are very different. For tennis, you need a shoe with a flexible sole. For cycling, soles need to be stiff so as to support the foot on the small surface area of the pedal

I have some Northwave Touring shoes that look like tennis shoes but are spd compatible. They don't make these models any more but may make something similar.

Ol skool tennis leather shoes have a pretty stiff sole, but they're hard to find and expensive. Driving shoes like Adidas Adiracers are excellent, but also expensive and hard to find. New Balance 608. Only shoes I've found that that not only support my arches well, they last a lot longer than the cheap junk and are American made, available at my local dept. store and until lately, for various reasons I won't go into (P&R stuff) reasonably priced on sale.
The only shoes I've bought and worn for a few years now and up to version 4 or so. Also not flashy, plain white with a black N, and the soles are very durable and don't wear over as quickly on my diabetic feet.
When I was younger it was an occasional pair of inexpensive Nikes.

Keen sandals, low boots or hiking boots. Keens work well for me, most are waterproof and go up to my size, 15.

These! For my commuting. Fairly stiff soles since they are cross-trainers rather than running shoes. Use them with cage pedals/straps.Generally not a fan of cycle shoes...Not keen on footwear that isn't comfortable for walking in.

Skechers Larson Norven Oxford. They aren't cycling shoes though. I like them because they are light weight, slip on, breathe well, and extremely comfortable. I wear steel toes at work. Light weight shoes are a blessing after kicking those off. If I'm not wearing my crocs, or steel toes, I'm wearing the Sketchers for everything else. Including riding. If I ever were to get a dedicated cycling shoe for flats, I'd consider Five Ten Free Riders. Everyone raves about them.

Got a pair of Giro Rumble VR Bike Shoes this Spring - more comfortable than the last couple of pairs of Shimano shoes I've worn for several years. Plus, better/more comfortable for walking, which I occasionally do uphill on rides. (Two hole SPD style.)
