The hit-and-run penalties need to be strengthened as well to discourage this.
My best wishes for Jim's recovery.

Yikes, sorry to hear about this. Hoping for a quick and full recovery.
Friday was a bad night for biking in Boston. A woman was struck and killed on Huntington Ave right in the middle of my campus a few hours after Jim's crash.
Be careful out there everybody.

I also hope the cretin in the car gets punished severely for this. Too many drivers walk away from hitting people because of police negligence or plain laziness.

Get well soon, Dr. Jim! I commute to and from a hospital as well, (Paramedic/ER Tech) and I've often thought about ending up back in the ER I just left because of some moron.

actually I start to wonder whether the driver is telling the truth. it's possible he was so drunk that he doesn't really remember the impact. I know that stretch of 1A rather well and cannot imagine how someone would hit a well-lit, reflectively-clad cyclist like Jim from behind unless he were either inebriated or willfully trying to kill someone (i.e., this was not a near miss desitned to "teach someone a lesson"). also consistent with him fleeing the scene lest he blow the breathalyzer test, as ckaspar suggested

https://goo.gl/maps/Bndf shows the street just outside the eyewitness' house. you can see from the cars on the map that there is plenty of clearance on either side.
I am thinking I may stop commuting in the dark, just take the train home instead.

Sadly, we should not be shocked or even surprised to hear news of bicyclist traffic injuries. Let's be realistic here; our streets are filled with poor/careless/impaired/old/inexperienced drivers who frequently stray beyond their lane or blow through a stop sign. This puts any vehicle in the violator's path in peril. My god, cell phone callers/texters alone make the streets a high-risk gamble, especially at peak traffic times.
We feel like our bright clothing and flashing lights will protect us. We think statutes granting us equal access to the roadways guarantee us equal access to space among cars and trucks in traffic. Fact is, we are highly vulnerable; we ride at substantial risk; our safety depends on the vagaries of driver and traffic conditions.
I see bicyclists riding the streets in places where a sensible person would not be. Their presence in perilous locations seems defiant! Its like they are thinking "I've got as much right to be here as the cars, so here I shall ride".
No doubt our fellow cyclist, Jim, was following the rules and being as safe as he possibly could. The wild card was the driver, probably under the influence of something, who struck him. Unfortunately, the deck is stacked against us with enough wild cards to make the game pretty darn dangerous. To pretend that isn't so is downright foolish.

I drove by the scene of the crime today. can't tell the exact spot, but I looked up the address of the eyewitness, so it must have been pretty close to there. sure enough, the lane on each side is plenty wide - maybe enough for two narrow cars, even.
if anyone hears anything about Jim please post.

Also when searching for that on Google I saw where a student was killed Friday night riding her bike near Northeastern campus. Link to that story. https://www1.whdh.com/news/articles/l...bus-in-boston/
Looks like Boston is not a very safe place to ride. Everybody please be careful. Also I wish Jim a quick recovery.

Wow, best wishes for recovery. And yeah, the driver must have been drunk and needed to sleep it off.

I agree that seems likely. We had a similar case locally recently. The DUI laws have had the penalties increased to the point where it is frequently advantageous for a drunk driver to flee the scene even if they're later apprehended but when it's too late to do a blood test.
The hit-and-run penalties need to be strengthened as well to discourage this.

Jim I do hope you heal up 100%, get out and keep pedaling.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Jim. I hope you have a fast and full recovery. Sounds like there was nothing you could have done to prevent it, and that's the scariest part. It could have happened to any of us.

"
Following this investigation, police charged the man with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene after causing serious personal injury. Norwood Police said these offenses are not arrestable."
Ain't that some crap!!

Sounds about right. What's wrong with the charges? Do you have additional facts?
