US Source for Shimano Rear Derailleur "Cover with Tongue?"

I'm looking for the "Cover with tongue" which goes over the cable at the rear derailleur and prevents the cable from fraying. I've run the bike without it but the cable frays and fails prematurely.

The Ultegra 6800 and Dura Ace 9000 manuals list the part separately as Y5XX38000.

The 105 manual lists it as part of the "Cable Adjusting Bolt Unit" under part number Y5YE98030.

Either way, I have an immediate need for one and would like to order a half dozen to have on hand. All I can find is eBay and UK based sites.

They guys at Performance used to hook me up.

Anyone know of a US based online source?

ebay doesn't ship to the US?

the MTB RD come with a type of ferrule that combines the ferrule and that longer thinner extension you are looking for. I assumed it is for better sealing against dirt, but it also may protect from fraying. You may be able to use that as well.

A lot of these parts are sort of like the proverbial balls we used to have in our computer mouse. You just couldn't purchase a mouse ball by itself back then, so those that took them out and bounced them on the floor and subsequently lost them had to get a new mouse. I'd imagine that similarly, Shimano just doesn't package and sell them individually. When you buy Shimano DR's and shifters as retail, they come packaged with all sorts of extra end caps and other small stuff like you are wanting.

Likely your local bike shops have had to buy retail Shimano DR's and shifters so they probably have plenty tucked away in their maintenance shop. So making an interesting conversation with a bike shop owner or longtime employee will probably get you some free or a token amount.

I looked at these to replace Yokozuna ferrules:

not exactly what you're looking for

Well, I've ordered from SJS in the UK.

For now the bike is back together with a used cable, which I'm sure will go bad if left on for any length of time. It will certainly get me through until parts arrive.

I'm appreciate that you are attempting to help.

Suffice to say that I don't care to order from eBay and I didn't start this thread to debate it.

I hope you can respect that.

Try Shimano USA in Irvine, CA at (949) 951-5003. They may be willing to send you that part or the entire barrel adjusting unit. I've had good luck with them in the past for small, otherwise unavailable parts.

If one replaces their $6 cable every so often there's no problem. Andy

A few cents worth of PTFE spaghetti tubing from an electronics supplier can be a permanent fix.

Funny, I was just working on this tonight and your post was the fourth hit after Shimano, sjs cycle and eBay (twice).

Mine was worn down and pretty much fell out when I was redoing my cabling.

Being cheap and wanting immediate gratification, I did a makeshift fix.

I had a long nose shifter ferrule left over from something:

I cut it down with a mat knife and file until it fit in the hole:
(sorry about the blurry photo)

And also cut down and installed the rubber boot for the lulz:

(sorry, no photo with just the tongue/nose)

Yeah, the cable will probably also wear through it, but hopefully not as quickly as the cable would abrade against the derailleur otherwise.

I've been using SRAM long-nose ferrules for quite a few different projects (not your exact derailleur).

Bouncing around the web, it appears as if Shimano's cable kit also comes with ferrules.
