Brompton, my new commuter

My Brompton has now become my daily commuter and now I am thinking of two upgrades. First I would like new hinge clamps. Thinking of the Bike Fun ones, but was hoping I could order them from inside North America if possible if not I will go the Taiwan root. Does anybody own these and do you recommend them?

Second I am thinking about Schwalbe Winter tires. Has anybody tried them and do the fit nicely under fenders?

Any help would be appreciated.

Awesome bike isn't it. I will provide a link where you can get accessories. It's where I purchased my Brommie just over two years ago now. I'm not quite sure about their shipping policies, whether or not they will ship to Canada, but you might, at least, enjoy browsing their store.

Take a look at NOV designs. They have a magnate on one side.

If you get some studded snows let me know how they work out. We don't get the snow here in Casper WY you must get in Toronto but I would like to be able to ride on icy streets safely.

Dunno about the winter tires but the hinge clamp upgrade is ALWAYS my first when I get a new Brompton.

Unless you don't intend to take advantage of the Brompton's superb fold regularly, the hinge clamps make folding the bikes just a little less of a finicky affair.

Thanks everyone for you links and advice. I want new hinge clamps to take advantage of a speedier fold. The magnet in the NOV designs look promising but what I like about the BikeFun ones, is the limit bolt on the inside so you unscrew the hinge clamp until it stops then open the hinge.

I used studded tires on my 700c commuter and they worked great on the ice. Once I tried them I would never ride in the winter without them. So I really want them for my Brompton.

Again thanks for everyone's input.

We have used studded tyres the last 15 yrs approx.

found that in snow we like the narrow 622 wheels better than the wide 522 becouse they cut trough the snow.

Had 20" studded tyres for approx 10 yrs. Schwalbe Marathon Whinter is what I like. Also used homemade studded tyres and chains. works great when there is not much snow or slush, that is a wheelsize thing.

Bought the Marathon Whinters for my Brompton last year but did not install them. I should do it this year. Should be fine as long as there are no snow to plow trough.

My concerns about the Winter tires is they have half the studs of the Marathon Winters but Schwalbe doesn't make Marathon Winters in 349. I will get them anyways because really what else is there? I just wanted to make sure they will fit under the fenders. I am only buying them for ice and not snow.

I think you wanted the word Magnet
one of the forces of Nature, Physics..

Magnate OTOH, is a Person..

mag·nate ˈmaɡˌnāt,ˈmaɡnət/
noun
a wealthy and influential person, especially in business.
"a media magnate"
synonyms: tycoon, mogul, captain of industry, baron, lord, king, magnifico; ..

Origin

late Middle English: from late Latin magnas, magnat- ‘great man,’ from Latin magnus ‘great.’
Translate magnate to
Use over time for: magnate

You are right. They are "winter", not marathon winters.

Number of studs is not the only factor. I remember when we started riding I was suprised my son would fall much more often than me... until I realised he was to light to properly benefit from the studs. I was quite a bit heavyer than him and did not fall. If you are not heavy enough then load your bike down to make sure you get proper contact with the gound

Thanks for that. I can assure you that I am heavy enough for contact though I wish it wasn't so!!!! That gave me a good laugh.

I first started building studded tires in '97. We used short roofing nails with an old Tire inside to keep the heads from backing out. Then sheet metal screws. Then K-Lath 1/2" sheetrock screws and now self tapping sheet metal screws. The hardened screws last a lot longer than just regular sheet metal screws.

Lots of years I have just run a front wheel with studs. A couple of years ago I dedicated a bike to just winter riding. Disc brakes are critical for winter riding.

Ive been fine with drum brake hubs for decades, so discs are not that critical .

I retrofitted wheels on an old MTB, made before any one but Phil Wood had created good disc brakes for bicycles.

Now if you are shopping for a Newer bike you have the option to buy one set up with disc brakes.. you can ..

just realize they will need more service than a Drum brake hub, like Sturmey-Archer has made .

And continues to make, even after the ownership changed.

>>>But since this is about Bromptons there is only custom options , to not use their rim brakes ..

FWIW, Greenspeed the recumbent maker and wholesale distributor for Brompton in Australia, re manufactured some S-A drum hubs,

to fit in the narrow confines of the Brompton frames and forks..
