This is my '87 Diamond Back Ascent EX set-up for touring. Brake/shifters are RetroShift, rando bars, rack braze ons were there for my Tubus racks. I have a set of cranks and new wheels waiting, I still need to pick up a new rear derailleur that will hit a 36T cassette. This thing fits great for distance riding.

Yes, it is a SS MTB with track ends. Nice welded Reynolds 520 frame, great rider. I think they came to market in 2005, at the outset of the SS craze, before the 29er craze.

I acquired it while still laboring under the misapprehension that I was most comfortable in the "superman pose" TT range (60 cm).

Seven years and a dozen bikes later, I realize I'm much more better off with a 57cm tt. I have long legs and short torso.

Hey belacqua,

A buddy of mine had the same issue with his Swobo commuter, he remedied everything with a bar swap. He swears by the Nitto Jitensha touring bar! The Jitensha comes in a 31.8 silver finish, here's a link:

Your GT looks super solid and I imagine it tears up the trails, great job on the build!

I know WNG recently got his '91 Tequesta back, his is the custom color Moody Blues. I also have a '91 Tequesta but mine is the other custom color, Purple Haze, I'm converting it over to 700C and it'll be my little angel's first road bike... she's always loved the purple paint.



The first photo is when it was my ol'school racer, next is the '91 catalog page for the custom colors, the last two are progress shots.


I gotta ask you, how do you like the Command Shifters when you get in the dirt? Any pros or cons that you can share?

Not familiar with the models, but they both look like worthy candidates to me for not much cash. I think the Scott has some pretty cool styling; to me the Fisher looks like it has better components but I'll let one of the experts chime in on that.

I'd choose the Gary Fisher....a higher level offering than the Scott, plus it's newer...mid 90s. Double water bottle bosses, top tube cable routing, And probably 1 1/8" fork and stem. STX, and probably Alivio components on the GF. It's a Trek era Tassajara.
Looks like a 18-19" frame. Make sure the size fits.

Whether you're more legs or more torso at close to 6 foot you need a bigger than most of those you've posted. If you're going to get into one of these bikes, go for the absolute highest end frame possible within your budget, that'll pay big down the line. Check out this Stumpjumper in your backyard for $65.00, the ad has only been for 2 days so there is a good chance it's still available.

Good running bike, paint not to bad, right shifter works but needs work. has speedometer. good tires, but has the small filler stems, so you need a special pump and I have one that works you can have. This bike is probably worth more so give me a higher offer if you really want it. Also it has a real high quality seat worth 40 bucks probably. Only selling cause I can't ride to good anymore. Now before everyone flips out about the suspension fork, we all know rigid fork are dirt cheap and can be found on Ebay, Craigslist, or other members on this forum. I know I have a double butted Miyata rigid fork with a threaded steer tube in the spare bin that'll fit that frame if you're in need and can't find one locally. The shipping from SoCal to SLC wouldn't be that much and you'll still come in under 100 bucks but you'd have a much higher end bike to begin your dirt drop conversion. Besides, the way I see it, the good tires and newer seat make up for the fork swap.

MikesChevelle, look into the Stumpjumper, it's the best bike that I could find in SLC for the dough. If the fork swap is an issue, don't let it be, it's a piece of cake! My buddy Derek from the Barracuda mountain bike forum is a chef in SLC, he's pulled a couple of rigid forks off some Barracudas, I'm sure he'd be willing to help out a fellow rider. Maybe a quality 6 pack or offer him the suspension fork in trade for his help, Derek is good people. Let me know if I can help or if you'd like Derek's help... I'm always game to see another good dirt drop conversion added to this thread!

Cannondale is too small.

IF you can get the Raleigh at a realistic price, its a good one. Rusty chain, neglected = $100 or less.

Gary Fisher is probably the best.

Personally, I would avoid anything with a suspension fork.

If I am anywhere near Boise, I am in my car picking up this bike NOW! Its not a racing bike, but its a sweet touring bike with G1 Cyclone GT RD, etc.

C'mon Bill, you know that Stumpjumper is the best frame of all he's listed... and... you are the king of part swapping, so you know that fork swap is not an issue! Many times have you posted about going for the best quality frame possible as it's the heart of the build. Don't make me dig through your postings to find a quote suggesting that a would be builder get the best frame possible within his or her budget!

The Raleigh is a nice one, but could be a bit too big at 24". I just picked up a 85? Raleigh Tamarack with similar geometry. And it's the consensus that they make poor drop bar conversions.

The Stumpjumper looks to be the right size. Very good price too. 18" frames are too small for you for a drop bar project.

I looked at both of those, they are both too small for someone your size. The bottom line being both are lesser grade frames with lower end components... not a Stumpjumper, not the top tier that Specialized offered. Sure there are high end and low end Stumpjumpers but the name alone represents the best steel tubing and at least mid-level components. The Stumpy looks to have a black LX cranks with a long cage XT derailleur, it probably has XT/LX mix of components.

Now, I'm going to leave it alone...
