Curious. How much of your stem is inside the steerer tube?
Cheers

The stem is a Nitto Technomic. They are pretty tall and it is inserted into the fork a bit past the MIN insertion line.

A quick and dirty conversion done for the Clunker Challenge 100 - c.1994 Bianchi Timber Wolf with nicer wheels, SR rando bars and scavenged levers and shifters. It works, and after the Challenge is over and I can spend more than $100 total, I think I'll improve it with some nicer parts.

Getting ready for a big camping trip, so it was time to update the Cimarron. I picked up a 1991 Shogun Prairie Grinder last week (not my size) and decided its XT parts "belonged" on my Cimarron. Added the Kona Curve brakes for the heck of it (came out of the bin). I have a set of Paul brakes around here somewhere, can't find them right now so the Konas will have to do.
Of all the bikes I own, this garage sale, beat up Cimarron remains my favorite.

Asking for a friend What size is it?
Please post a picture of your loaded Cimarron. Feed the need.
Thanks

I've been following this thread for some time and giving it a shot myself now. I'm rebuilding a 1994 Trek 850 Mt. Track into a commuter/school-daycare drop-off/occasional trail riding combo. As I'm new here, I'll post some pics as soon as I get to 10 posts

Looking forward to seeing your 850. I converted my 1995 recently ( see https://www.bikeforums.net/20571018-post6191.html Post 6191). I've put on, not only proper bar tape but many miles on mine and I really enjoy it. The Deore indexed thumbie workers very nice. I like the riding position.

Front view of my 1980's MIELE MTB with just added V-brakes. Took this image today to show how I use an extra toestrap to secure a bottle of water to the handlebar. I guess i need to take some other images from the side?
Cheers

Finally finished up the 700c road/gravel conversion of my 1995 GT Tequesta. Veloce 10sp shifters & front derailleur, Centaur 11sp rear derailleur, Shimano Alivio (cr18) wheels, Sunrace 10sp cassette, Dia Compe 610 style unbranded center pull brakes. Shifting is working pretty well but I’m waiting for a Jtek Shiftmate to arrive to clean it up. Time to tweak my position setup... it’s been 20+ years since I’ve had a drop bar bike. ;^) Oh yea... and I got it painted...

Question for you all--I want to try my '94 stumpjumper as a drop bar, but I can't get the bars high enough while keeping the reach manageable.
what do you think about putting a new aftermarket fork in (1'' threadless, 260mm steerer) and using spacers to get the stem mounted high on the steerer?
also, any recommendations on a fork that would work?

Would love to see pics of that. I just had a huge (57cm ST, 60cm TT) '83 Grizzly frame powdercoated in a slightly-more-flashy version of the original "Sierra Blue".

stock is 1" threadless!
also, the Dimension forks I'm looking at have 26 cm steerer, which seems like it would give me about 5cm of additional rise over what I've got now. Maybe something with even longer steerer might be available?

Could you have the original fork steerer threaded and use a quill stem?

I hadn't thought of this--thanks for the idea. My initial thought is I wouldn't want to try installing a new headset in my garage if I could avoid it, and the new threadless forks run about $80, so it would be hard to beat the economy and simplicity of swapping.

but here's the other question I'm grappling with today--what do I really stand to gain by putting drops on this rig--favorite mtb in my small collection--when I already have bar ends.
Not a rhetorical question. I am hoping to use the thing for 5+ hour gravel rides.

You would have to confirm that the Inner diameter of the steerer is correct but I dont think you would need a new head set. If you have the longer steerer is threaded you could use a spacer under a 1" nut and lock ring.
