Extender? Most of the time a 34T Cog will need a "Long Cage" derailleur. What derailleur are you going to use?

Apparently a deore, which would certainly do that cassette

Maybe he/she means a derailleur claw (ie. "extension")?

For vertical dropout...

Horizontal dropout...

I put a Deore MT-60 on an Allez Epic and it’s running a 34t large cog.

Which Deore do you have?

Late 80's Deore LX 7-speed
Replaced 12-28 cassette with a 12-34
Looked at Wolftooth hangers.

Using a triple. With this setup I'll avoid the outer ring. Might even replace it with a bash guard.

I think LX started in early 90’s.

You can get the number off the back of the rear derailleur. Look up the specs.

Have you tried it, “without” a Wolftooth RoadLink?

!988 Bianchi Osprey. 7-speed LX
Very little clearance between 28 tooth ring and derailleur cage.
What hanger do I need. Does not have to be Wolftooth.

Get a nine speed Deore M591 and you can use your 34t w/o a kluge.

I think something's amiss, because that LX derailleur should clear a 28t with plenty to spare. The max cog size is 32t. Can we get a picture of your bike and the rear drop out area?

No kludges should be necessary. Here is a very early Deore LX riding a 34T cog:

(Apologies for the mess in the background! )

Is that bike maintenance happening in the kitchen?

In the dining room, technically.

Looks like you could use some B screw adjustment to clear a 32/34, which should be emminently possible with that RD.
Also, check to see if the RD body can pivot smoothly, it might be stuck in place. Needs to be able to pivot downward as it moves inward.

X2 on the B screw adjustment. I had to adjust my Deore DX (identical to the LX for practical purposes) out fairly far to get it to clear a 34t.

Make sure, also, since you're messing with cog/cassette sizes that your chain is the proper length (ie. a few links longer). Don't want any busted derailleurs.

You will still need to have a long-enough chain to shift into the big ring-big cog combination because you will inevitably forget to avoid it. Doing it with a too-short chain invites possibly-extensive damage.
