Linda's Tourer

There's been a recurring theme in here of converting old-school mountain bikes into worthy tour bikes. Here is one that I've done for my missus.

Trek 930. I picked it up for $100, stripped it down to the frame and fork. Frame-Savered it, and cleaned and polished everything. Replaced bearings everywhere that had bearings, plus a new bottom bracket just because.

Gave the wheels a good clean-up and then a tune-up on the TS-2. Skinned them with some Continental Travel Contacts. The bike has an Ibera rear rack. The cost of it was actually very low on Amazon, so I decided to give it a try. I was quite pleased with the quality.

I added a new Sram crankset and a Sram cassette with a much lower gear-inch than the original. I never took time to get the actual count, but trust me - its much lower than the original cluster. New Sram chain too!

She loves the Jones bars. I had to keep her involved and kept experimenting with the stem heights until she found the sweet spot. She's definitely an upright-style rider. I rather wish Jones made a Loop bar with some rise to it.

I topped it all off with Planet Bike Cascadia fenders. I seriously like this bike, and she looks marvelous on it. She's either on this or her fatbike. Thanks for looking!

Legit. I'm working on customizing my wife's 1984 Trek 620 to meet her needs. She's definitely an upright rider, too. I just received the Nitto mustache bars to replace the drop bars. She likes the mustache bars on my XO-2, so we decided to go that route, for now.

Nice work!

Yes, Trek 930's make wonderful conversions.

I have two myself for that purpose. One the same year as yours and one a year newer, I think.

I went the trekking handlebar route on mine.

Here is an example of another 930 build from CGOAB.

Steerer tube fortunately, left long? ( long is good if it is in the service of fitting comfortably. )

She choose the (rather wide) bars or did you choose them for her? So, Does it work for her.. ?

I await her ride revue after being on the road all day riding it.

Looks nice! Love the Jones bars, I keep hoping someone makes a lesser priced knockoff one of these days. May just have to bite the bullet and give them a shot sometime, though!

The steerer seems long, but I'm ashamed to admit that its actually a super-long threaded-to-threadless quill adapter. She bought the bars unbeknownst to me because she really liked the ones I had on the LHT. She did buy the narrower size, and they fit her nicely after all of the fussing about with the stem height. Personally I do not like it. It rubs me the wrong way, and I consider it cheating a little. She'll ride it for the summer, and then I think I'll swap the bars out for some Velo Orange Tourist bars, or something equally nice with a nice rise to them. Soma and Origin* make nice bars also. I'll put the H-Bar on her fatbike. I'll either ditch the quill adapter for a regular quill stem, or at the very least use a small one. After much ado about this, I think we'll strike a happy medium.

We did a lot of trial fittings and sittings and I have an incline app for my iphone to dial in the seat just right. Truthfully, I still have a lot hope for this bike, but I'm already eyeing a better bike for her. Meanwhile, this one works just fine.

Is it the Soma adapter? If not, what is it? The decorative spacers seem to sit flush against the top, which isnt common as most adapters have an annoying angle to them which means spacers cant sit flush.

Why would you swap it out because YOU don't like it? It is her bike, what SHE likes is what is important.

You know your wife better than us, but I wouldn't go changing out bits on my fiancees bike because of MY preferences.

I did a lot of trimming to make it work and look how I wanted.

That's the whole point of this thread, bro!

My wife is pretty easy-going. We share a mutual code: I don't question her on the things that she's of higher knowledge and experience, and she does the same in return for me. We've been together 40 years, and that seems to work very well for us. She's the brain (MSIT) and I'm the artist. Besides, I would never just change things without her acknowledgement.

As far as looks go, its all about how it looks for me. I'll never be totally happy with anything until I get it to look the way I want it.

Glad you found what works for ya! Mine would kill me if I started changing her bike because I didn't like something! I get told what to do to it, if I do anything else, I better run and hide

hidden in the steerer stack on this WB Bicycle Gallery: Robert Clark's Koga Miyata WTR

is a BBB BHP 21 stem raiser.. BBB is a NL company , without a US distributor. now.

(the one they had , is not in business now.)

Clever is the internal quill wedge bolt is internally threaded, so threadless headset adjustment is still on the top..

What's really irritating to me is the fact that I'm a retired machinist, and could easily make one if I had a lathe at home. I now have a good idea that I'll be installing a front suspension fork. Why didn't I think of that before? Lol.

Nice bike.

I like the Jones bar, but find it works better for a more upright riding position, maybe not so great on a lot of bikes.

I think it lacks a hand position equivalent to hands on the brake hoods. I find it more comfortable if I have a position where the wrists aren't flat. Handlebars and saddles are very personal, what works for you may not work for others.

Good job on the bike.

Nice work, looks amazing! Insanely jealous of all the knowledge and skill you (and everyone else on this forum) have when it comes to bikes. I love to bike but really don't have the first clue when it comes to major repair and overhauls (you lost me at gear inches!). Perhaps one day..... Anyways, like I said it looks amazing, great job,

I doubt that she'll ever do more than a day tour, Ricky, but we're headed to the cape today. We're staying at an inn on the shore and we'll ride around from there. Does that count?

They used to.
A firm called Titec used to make some under license to Jones.
I owned a Titec J bar for a while until I replaced it with a genuine unit with a full loop.
