Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What I know about the stand is the that clamp is "problematic". The clamp doesn't work well when new and gets progressively worse over time. Yes I have one. The day I acquired a good work stand the shortcomings of inferior work stands became glaringly apparent. Good tools make for more efficient and more enjoyable work.

Never had any problem clamping my bikes that way. All of them are steel with round tubes, however.

1- if the user isn't thoughtful, tightening the clamp could dent the tube.
2- it can easily scuff up the paint, versus clamping at the seatpost which won't scuff paint.

There just isn't an upside to clamping the top tube.

My mistake. 5 legs is correct. Does your center post tighten enough? Mine never gets tight enough and the bike rotates as I work on it. I may grind a bit off each face of the clamp.

Just be careful, especially doing pedals, cranks and bottom brackets.

Once you get to .6 and less wall thickness that area gets to be a crumple zone.

Especially if you ever get some modern ultralight tubing like XCR, Spirit, etc. - clamp the seatpost or dummy seatpost.

Thanks, I didn't think about it - my bikes aren't super light, but just in case.
For BB loosening/tightening I prefer to work with the bike on the floor.

Yes, it is tight, but I’ve only got it a couple of weeks ago and used it several times. How it behaves after prolonged use is an unknown quantity to me at this point.
