Strava / veloviewer amusement

For those of you who use strava, you should also check out veloviewer - it pulls data from strava and presents it in different (and interesting) ways. That little sig image below is from veloviewer.

Anyway, one of the things they do is tell you if your time has improved on any segments (which it sometimes does without even riding it) and whether it's gotten worse. I did two rides today, one at 4 am and one just now at 4 pm and in the intervening 12 hours, I apparently did worse on SEVENTY ONE segments. (see below for the gory, uninteresting details). 12 hours!

Anyway, one of the things I enjoy about veloviewer is the summary tab - it has a graph of your mileage progress for the year, and for me at least it shows the last two years as well. It's pretty slick.

Anyway, check it out - it does a lot of interesting stuff with your ride data and it's fun to poke around in there. Don't be shocked by the terrible numbers below, there are segments around here that have well over 5,000 riders. It doesn't make me feel better about being #2000 but maybe if I keep repeating it to myself.

Ha, that's fun!
<start playing Glory Days>
It pulled up my best ever segment 22 miles @20 MPH with 767' of climbing.
</end Glory Days>
Reminds me how bad I suck currently

But Velo Viewer is fun, thanks for sharing!

I really like Veloviewer -- I picked it up from someone's .sig here, I think. The summary info is nice, but I /really/ like the 3D segment viewer. The Veloviewer score is nice, since it's a 'semi-independent' way of comparing people who ride utterly different areas, and is a good measure of progress for me!

Also, since I've apparently lost the ability to compare myself and the segment leader or another rider in Strava (or at least, can't find it which counts as the same), the Veloviewer <-> race shape integration is nice for me having a clue about where I am sucking so bad.

That's a killer ride schedule you've been able to maintain!! I'm trying to get mine back up to par that I was one last fall/winter. Getting sick in Jan allowed me to become lazy again

I've been riding 4 days a week now all of 2013 and 2014. Thinking about upping it to 5 days a week now with daylight savings time starting. I was logging walks for a while in the app but Strava doesn't do well at separating the two types of activities.

I HATE VELOVIEWER!!! And TH for making me look at it.

I came in 97th out of 137 who uploaded to Strava after the Marathon ride. And I have an amazing 33.71 score overall.

My natural status is very chaotic and unpredictable (ask my wife) but I know that if i am to continue riding it has to be striclty scheduled as it would be way too easy to "fall off the wagon"

you're right, its very easy to fall off and MUCH harder to get back on and get the family knowing the schedule needs to get back on track. I still feel like I'm battling it now and finding my body wanting to sleep in saturdays when i should be on the bike as the sun comes up.

Mine is 83 I think... but my wife has a score in the 90s Go figure! She's logged two rides to strava - ever. I think if you are female your segment scores can be a lot higher because there aren't as many women out there riding & stravaing.

Case in point - some woman in my area has a time about 10 seconds better than my wife, who is now determined to beat her on that segment. I tried explaining that the particular woman in question rides about 800 miles a month and was recently in the California state road race championships... it fell on deaf ears. LOL.

Hey, another cool new feature: they put time, distance and elevation "awards" between the score and the distance portion.

LMAO - I think the gold star just means you did it once... 3 gold stars = 3 times. I really don't think I'm going to hit 7500 feet again any time soon!

Just out of curiosity, do they have a 20 minute award?

So what does the VV score say? Is it a percentage expression, like a 33.58 means your ranking is better than 33.58% of the riders on that segment?

Basically. They only include your best 100 places (percentage wise). Tragically, for clydes, they do not include downhill segments.

[h=3]VeloViewer Score[/h]
Your VeloViewer score is a way to compare yourself against your peers. It is the average segment position score from your top 25% (max 100) of non-downhill segment.
More detail:
  • Position score - Each of your completed segments comes with a score, between 0 and 100, that represents your relative position based on the number of other athletes that have also ridden the segment. The higher the score the better!
  • Why not use placing? - Being 1st of 2 athletes isn't the same value as being 1st of 1,000. Equally being last of 2 athletes isn't anywhere near as bad as last of 1,000. The position score reflects how you stack up against others much better than your actual placing.
  • 25% - Only your top 25% of scores (to a maximum of 100) are taken into consideration as I'm guessing you haven't visited the pain cave for the majority of your segments so we only want to include those where you have.
  • But we've got local pro's taking the top spots - Seeing as the score isn't based on actual positions then this should well balance out as if the area is good enough for lots of pro's to ride there, chances are there are a lot more non-pro riders too so giving the potential for higher relative scores.
  • But I'm an awesome downhiller! - I feel your pain but to comply with STRAVA API usage rules, flat or uphill only.
Good ways to improve your score could be:
  • Go for segments you've not ridden before to get your worse scores out of your top 25%.
  • Check out your segments where you score below you VeloViewer score but still within the top 25% and try and improve your placing.
  • Ride segments that have a higher number of athletes as the potential for a higher score is better, but then so is the potential for a lower score.
  • Get fitter!
