Exploring new trails - Scirocco's maiden voyage
Since I finished the Scirocco last weekend, I havent had a chance to take it to my usual trails. By my house there is a small range of mountains that I have yet to discover but I could see what looked like doubletrack from a distance. So, I got up at 6am and headed out there for some exploration.
LOTS OF CLIMBING!!! Im seriously considering going clipless. The usual trails I go to are XC oriented but none of them has this much climbing. Most of the trail was rideable with the exception of big rocks and loose gravel. I took about 30 pics but only 12 came out decent.
Not quite bling but it gets the job done. If it wasnt for my outta-shape-ass and the lack of clipless Im sure I would have done much better but the Scirocco has amazing climbing ability. The rear wheel hooks in to the dirt well and having a lockout on the Reba helped me keep the front down. At 27lbs, I noticed the difference compared to the 03 HardRock I used to ride.
I never realized how nose-up my saddle was... Gotta fix that.
CLIMBING, climbing, climbing, and more climbing...
What goes up must come down. The descents are quite fun but I had to keep my eye out for giant rocks in the middle of the trails
And then there was this little doozy. I had to dismount and scope the section first before going blindly into it. The pic doesnt do it justice, once youre on your bike, it feels pretty steep. I washed out the first 2 tries but pinned it on the 3rd. There is a ton of loose gravel here that I had to kick around to make a good line.
From the other side. It may look harmless but for someone who hasnt ridden in 2 years, I had to psyche myself out to go down it.
Small elevation changes and of course more caves
Which way to go? Doesnt matter because both doubletracks stay within 10 feet of each other. It almost feels dual-slalomish for the next 10 minutes. I picked up some decent speed for the next 15 minutes so I didnt bother with pictures until...
A DEAD END!
There is some singletrack on the other side of that gap but it washes out into rocks and brush. The trail definitely has some potential but it will need some work. If I can encourage other riders to go there, we might have something good. Oh well, turn around and go back the way I came.
All in all it was a fun 3 hour venture in the Vegas desert. Im going to my ususal spots tomorrow to see what I have been missing for two years.
Ride on.
