... actually, I have a cronic pulled muscle in my upper back and anything restricting free movement tweaks it again. Any verticle presses I do must be with individual dumbbells.
Behind the head v. in front aren't going to be that different. The biggest point is to try and replicate natural movements. Isolating muscles with no purpose of usabilaty is only for body-builders who want the show-and-tell body.

Not cheating. The back support on the bench was getting in the way of the bar, so I'm just going to sit on it like a stool instead of lean my back into it. That should help with form with no cheating since I can't lean on anything.
Thanks for the form reminder.
Also, are you saying that behind the neck presses are useless vs the same thing in front of the face?

the back support makes you keep your back straight, or slightly back..this is good..a straight back is a healthy back, start crunching over to get more reps and your form fails and you injure something.
ps...get back on the bike!!

i am not saying that it might not develop some muscles..however, the risk isn't worth the gain. You aren't working different muscles, you're just working those mucsles differently, which for some groups is good but you're asking for a sprain or torn muscle doing them behind your back.

do your overhead pressing in front of the face.
Behind the head is more stressful for the muscles of the rotator cuff.
The same goes for pulldowns.

Do Arnold Presses with dumbbells. Standing.
Add lateral raises and shrugs for a complete shoulder routine.

In other news, looking at my power file from the STUCI intervals yesterday, I was at 345W for a significant number of them. Very good to see.
My training partner/teammate, on the other hand weighs 160 lbs and had several eight and six minute intervals in the 355-365W ranges, and finished off at 373W. Holy f**k. If he's at 355W FTP, then that would be 4.9 W/kg. He's got his Cat 3 upgrade points, but the rep has been giving him a hard time about it (he just has enough points), so he may be bending the Cat 4s over in February.

I don't do pulldowns behind the neck.
Thanks for the input ya'll.
My back is so sore right now. I'll take it a little easier on the core/back stuff tomorrow. Egad.

I've read somewhere that you have to go slow to get fast..
well if that's the case today was a great day for the slow part. I am helping out a friend that is just getting into riding that wants to do a 56 mile race in april, just with form and general riding and to encourage her to be out there riding.
today's staggering effort was
1:38 at 104w average...good times. does that even constitute as active recovery?
ohh well..it was still fun to see a friend getting into riding.

Making a kilometer blurry
Ouch. I would have worked a 6x1' in there I think, then just ride back to her for the 5' recoveries.

Training status. On hold for the next week or so. Strep throat with a big ole shot of penicillin in the ass today. Then on Friday I'm having outpatient surgery that will make the prospect of sitting on a saddle somewhat akin to torture. Hopefully it won't be a bad recovery.

I first read 'pencil in the ass' and clenched my cheeks wondering why? But on further review I read, 'penicillin.' But in any case, "Ouch."

it was painful...but it actually felt good. like you, i feel like every ride has to count..sometimes it's nice to go ride and just talk to someone rather than stare at the wheel in front in desperation.

coming from someone that has had rotator cuff and labrum repairs i can tell you that pulling down or pushing up weight behind the head is both unatural and injury inducing. I just don't see the real world application to doing any of it....and coming from my military background we do some crazy **** with out bodies.

Got two hours in with 1.5 hours of tempo.
Almost lost it on a brief downhill section hitting a squirrel at 28 mph. My front wheel missed him, but the back wheel hit something HARD and was jolted up and over a couple of inches.
Got rained on and now my newest bike has been "christened". I needed to clean the chain anyways.

friggen cold out today. I was a bit underdressed, so my toes and hands got pretty cold. It was only 45* or so, but I guess the cold headwind and overcast made a difference. Blaze Wool socks plus toe covers wasn't enough. Time to break out the neoprene thick shoe covers I suppose.
Same route as yesterday, except backwards. The climbs are steeper/shorter this direction. I was a little slower today, both because I wasn't working as hard, and because there was a headwind.
NP 163, AP 145, 2:11 rolling.

to those who do indoor training now. how do you like spinervals? I have just started using sufferfest and am looking into the realrides which are great because it is actual cycling footage. i did a search and found the most common spinervals people like but with the previews on there site it shows a bunch of people in like a spin class. that seems extremely boring. before i buy one i want to make sure that it is not that bad. does it suck to be watching people on an indoor trainer? In all honesty it is pretty pathetic to be riding a bike indoors while watching people on tv do the same thing lol. atleast it is a little interesting when you are watching actual footage of people riding outside. so are spinervals that bad or are they some of the better indoor dvds?

I've got the Sprinting Machine spinerval, and it is basically a spin class. Pretty good though, but I haven't tried others.

5 hrs out on the road this morning. First 2.5 w slow-ish group at high z1. Last 2.5 by myself at high z2, much of it in z3.
It was 26 degrees F when I started this morning. High today of 42. This is coastal california. WTF.....
I wore a cap, beanie over the cap, leg warmers, knee warmers, bibs, team shorts over the bibs, base layer, wool jersey, arm warmers, wind vest, glove liners, gloves, two pairs of socks and some knit sock shoe covers. I was warm.
I considered swinging by my apt for 30s after the group portion of the ride to throw some layers in the bushes but I decided to stay out a little farther from town and ride through a slightly longer-than planned inland valley loop. Glad I didn't peel layers as the valley was colder and covered in permafrost...
I can't wait until finals are over and I get to go put in some miles out in San Diego

6*4' hill repeats w/ about 13' SST before/after. Followed by my arm/ab routine. Good day of working out. Much better than yesterday, I actually felt motivated today.

I'm a big fan of that sufferfest podcast, which it sounds like you've found. Never liked the spinervals.
Really, I'd rather just hop on my mtb if at all possible. I went out today when it was 4˚ and it was still far better than riding the trainer.

1:50 hrs on the trainer, mostly recovery pace @ 90-95 RPM. From my faulty resistance curve equation for my trainer, that put's me at about 190 watts for 70 minutes. I fit in 40' at a slightly higher pace and effort an hour into it. 95-100 RPM puts me at around 230 watts for the 40'. HR didn't get above 155 the entire time, mostly in the 120-130 range. Good ride, still sore from the gym. 30 minutes of stretching.
