What a Difference 15 lbs Makes!

Planned to check out SDBC (San Diego Bike Club) club ride. I discovered their website, and they advertised seven rides for various levels. I showed up somewhat skeptical because My experience with club rides was ride the beginer ride and slog along slowly, or the regular ride, and get dropped about mile ten.

I selected a ride one step below what I felt my level to be, and the ride was exactly as advertised. I wound up with a Strava PR on Torrey Pines outside (By almost 4 minutes!). Next time I ride with them, two weeks from now, I will level up one.

https://app.strava.com/activities/45601533#784576763

Still near the bottom of the leaderboard, (3863rd /4016) but rising.

The old LA to San Diego Highway from Oceanside to San Diego is very popular with cyclists, and this is the second toughest hill on the route. The toughest is Torrey Pines Inside. The Inside refers to the adjacent route inside the State Park, which is much steeper for the first half mile.

Could be. Given my history, and on wife's orders, no rides out of cell phone coverage.

Yah its the group across from UTC. Parking lot of https://uccyclery.com/ SDBC has A, B, D1-D5 groups. Everything from beginners to hammerfest A & Bs. Get shelled from the A and you can sit up a bit and wait for the B group which is a tad bit slower and not AS aggressive on the hill attacks. https://www.sdbc.org/core/template.php?page=ride.satride

Here is the inside TP segment. 1st half is 10% grade then mellows a bit to like 7%

Yep. I rode with the D4's and it was pretty easy. Will ride D3 next time. in another 10-15 lbs I will probably be able to keep up with the D2.

That actually happened to me last time I rode with them. Wasn't in as good of shape as I thought. The A group goes at a pretty good clip.
