Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You need a 7/8 speed pin. But don't get a pin - get a Sram 7/8 speed master link.

+1 I never did like the Shimano pin system. Quick link of some kind is my preference. I have one on my chain and carry a compact breaker and another quick link in my tool kit in case I ever break/mangle a chain and need to cobble together something to get me home. It's also handy for cleaning a chain when a wipe with degreaser just won't do. I use the KMC links. No particular reason, it's just what my LBS has on hand. Never had a link failure.

BTW, my first "real" road bike was an early 90s Trek 1400, nice bike and I sometimes miss the simplicity of the DT shifters.

I bought a powerlink 7/8 and it doesn't fit. It's not wide enough and it won't engage.

I'd ask in the mechanic's forum but I don't remember 7 speed Shimano chains using a special pin, but then again, I haven't run 7 speed in a long time. Still, I wouldn't re-pin it. If the chain has a few miles on it, just replace it.

Shimano 7/8 speed chains DO need a new Shimano pin when re-installing. Or a quick-link.
