Chain rub R2000/R3000/old cranks
I have an older bike set up with new 8-speed Claris R2000 shifters, a new Sora R3000 front derailleur, a new 9-speed chain, old 6/7 speed cranks, and an old 8-speed RD. The rear shifting is great. The front shifting is not, I'm having a lot of chain rub that I can't seem to tune out, and not only cross chaining, but like in big/small. It looks like there's just not that much margin for error between chain and derailleur cage. It is a small bike with short chainstays which doesn't help. My question is, is this just a setup issue that I need to give another whirl at or is there an actual incompatibility here. Either between the R2000 shifters and the R3000 FD, or between the modern shifters/front derailleur and the old cranks, like maybe the chainrings are closer together now or something.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Might be the eclectic array of different component models. There is a lot you need to look at and I don't know where to start.

It will not work. The Sora FD-R3000 is only compatible with a Sora R3000 shifter. From what I have read Shimano change the cable pull and front derailleur ratio on the R3000.

OK thanks. so before I buy a Claris FD, is it the case that I should expect this setup to work on an old crankset? Or are the chainrings, even for 8-speed, closer together now.

I don’t think there is an issue with newer or older. Basically is has to with outside chain width and cassette spacing. I don’t think there was any chainring spacing differences between 7/8, but 9 and beyond was spaced closer. Disclaimer... not sure about 11/12 speed chainring spacing.

I have experience with Claris shifters and they seem to work fine. I don’t have any experience with the derailleurs. I have heard that they might not be that stellar. Since your rear derailleur is older you can look into a good older front derailleur, maybe an RSX, 105 or even Ultegra.

This. Sora R3K uses the newer cable pull; I got mine working with Ultegra 6700 (10sp) but not with legacy 9sp.
