It really shouldn't matter even if they were near you, no requirement to use them. The issue is many cyclists miss the MULTI USE part. I have much more empathy for the young kid erratically learning, than the pace line going 20+ passing by inches. I sometimes use the MUPs near me for variety, but I don't treat them as my personal high speed training facility. I try to treat others the way I want to be treated by motor vehicles when in the street. If I want to ride hard I ride in the streets. When I ride on the MUP I just go with the flow. I know there are many users of many ages, participating in many uses, at many skill levels and it's unrealistic to think I can just put my head down and run a training plan uninterrupted. I think of the MUP as a place for casual usage regardless of your use. In some ways I think the speed and splitting of groups by inches down the yellow line exasperates the things that frustrate the cyclists in the first place, like driving elderly people to salmon so they can see what's coming. For the most part cyclists are 'the things not like the others' by the nature of being on a vehicle and speed, so if push ever comes to shove we should be the ones barred. It's not a street, it's not a bike path, it's a muti-use path.

Much ado about nothing. You're far more likely to have a problem passing a walker who decides to change direction as you go by or from an animal.

How much time to you spend riding with no hands on your bike on the road when there are cars around? I'll bet you don't.

It is one thing to take your hands off if the situation is safe to grab put on or take off a jacket and to do so by making sure that there is no one else you can take out if something goes wrong. I have zero issues with that.

I can't believe that you actually ride on a MUP and take your hands off the bike when there are other people around. I'll bet you don't.

And if you do, I don't want to ride with you or near you.

Perhaps so, but that doesn't change the fact that it can be against the law.

You're correct. I seldom ride on MUPs. It doesn't bother me passing someone riding with no hands.

More importantly, should we say something to a person who's wearing clothes that are too baggy?

Their flapping t-shirt could cause enough turbulence to mess up my average mph.

I don't say anything to those riding with no hands. I just think it's thoughtless to do it around other people. And I agree with you that it's not a big deal if you do it for a reason and have a sense of the situation.

One thing that does happen here a lot are kids pulling wheelies, whilst riding towards me. Sometimes they struggle to catch it in time. So far this hasn't been an issue, there hasn't been a collision. That's a kind 'Cross that bridge when i come to it' kinda thing.

Perhaps ironically, I got yelled at by a salmon this spring. I pulled all the way over to the curb on the right and stopped. Wasn't intending on saying a word and just let him pass. He told me I could have moved out into traffic so he could have hugged the curb. Not only was that ludicrous in and of itself, his salmon buddy was behind him was and already occupying that spot. I would have had to go out near the double yellow line to safely avoid both of them.
What is a salmon ? Vision of you talking to fish that talk back is disturbing.

For anyone reading, not in the know, a salmon is someone using pedestrian road travel rules in an effort to stay alive. I'm pretty sure salmoning is illegal here. It seems an idea worth considering until they get to a junction...

Salmon swim upstream (for spawning). Human salmon go against the flow. Bicyclists in the USA riding on the left side of the road into oncoming bicycle and car traffic. Bicyclists in the UK riding on the right side of the road into oncoming bicycle or car traffic.

I'm amazed no-hands riding can even be done.

Even when I'm signaling my turns, my arm is out there for seconds only...I need it for steering!

Much easier than riding a wheelie, but some bikes are easier at no hands than others.

Not sure I would call this thread a discussion.
