Changed the wheels, tires, and pedals on the Fuji:

And there is a pile growing for a fat tire fixed project:

yep, its a firmstrong "urban", I changed out the tires, stem, bars, pedals, seatpost & saddle. I'll probably end up changing out the headset at some point as well as its pretty jank.

i really like the fuji. i vote changing the grips to black or black tape. maybe even something with stitching to match the saddle.

i look forward to the next build. have you decided on a frame?

Thanks, but I really like the feel of those grips, however silly they may look.

There is a mid-quality rigid steel MTB frame from circa 1990 in the mail somewhere. It has vertical dropouts, but I have a range of cogs and a half-link so chain tension should work out.

No. That is a 48x16 setup. With that chain length, I have the option to use larger rings and/or larger/smaller cogs depending on conditions. At some point, I may have two different length chains for this bike, but this setup works for now.

silly is fine as long as you know it.

are you using the pictured drop bars and stem? it could make a fun commuter if you get the geometry all sorted.

Yes, I plan to use the drop bars with the MTB riser stem. Ideally this will be a dirt road / fire road cruiser.

Vilano gets horned

OK, I know this is pretty lame cuz I just rotated the bars forward from their townie position to make them into horns. They were just too close facing to the rear. I now wish I hadn't chopped them down.

Not worth spending any money on this bike. It's just a beater made from old parts.

Cool bike. The stary grips are a lil tacky though.

It looks like that thing gets ridden alot. Might I suggest some road drops w hoods ????zzzzzzzzzzz
Also, a slammed quill stem w less rise (like a reg pearl) might look nice.

It is ridden a lot but no, and maybe I should not be posting it here as is probably belongs in the track forum. This machine does not get ridden on the street. It fits me really well for its purpose as-is. If this were a street machine, your suggestions would be good .

He originally had it set as a townie, so a low gear is good for that

650c wheels result in something like an 8% lower gear for a given ratio with 700c, same tire size and all. Somebody check my math cuz I suck

It's 40 x 17 and 700 x 32c tires, which works out to 63.5 gi. It's a nice comfortable ratio for around town riding and I'm not trying to break any speed records. Anyway, I like to spin a lot when I ride fixed.

Those wheels on the Vilano are 700c, but if they were 650c, I could run a higher ratio to get the same gearing. For example I run a 47 x 17 (2.76 ratio) on my Soma Rush with 700c wheels and 44 x 15 (2.93 ratio) on my Wabi Lightning with 650 wheels, but the overall gearing is a bit higher on the Rush (72.9 gi .vs. 71.3 gi). The Rush and Lightning are much lighter and have much higher performance tires than the Vilano, so I can run higher gearing on those bikes.
