Front wheel under load = tic tic tic sound.

OK, this is probably a dumb question but Im a bit confounded. When I ride my Kona Dew. I get a tic tic tic sound coming from the front wheel. When I put the bike in the bike stand and spin the wheel it is silent. The sound only happens when I ride the bike. I have looked for a loose piece of tread. I then trued the front wheel but I still havent solved it. Any ideas? Bad hub?

I've had the same thing happen; turns out that in spite of it sounding like a distinct ticking it was a particular pair of spokes rubbing, even though they were properly tensioned--I would assumed something like that would be more of a rubbing sound.

It took me forever to figure out which ones. I ended up having someone else watch the wheel as I rode slowly, then I taped together the pairs that were at the top and bottom when it clicked. Eventually I figured out which pair it was, greased the joint slightly, and it's been fine ever since.

If you think it may be spokes clicking, put a little oil or grease at each crossing. It may be hard to isolate which pair, just lube them all.

It also helps to go around the wheel squeezing pairs together with both hands.

Thanks for the replies. My old man eyes missed a spot in the rim near the valve stem that was lurching over just enough to lightly nick the brake pad. I think my old man ears could only hear it at higher speeds. Some adjustments with a spoke wretch may have solved it.

I had a similar issue some years ago, where my heel was striking the pannier on every revolution. It took longer than it should have to figure it out.

Going straight ?, while turning ?.

I've had computer magnets start to hit while under load.

Look for the simple stuff first.

It might be loose spokes from a poorly built wheel. I've heard similar things from a wheel that's not sufficiently tensioned. I'm assuming OP's wheel is machine built.

If truing didn't solve it - if it only happens under load, ticking can come from the headset and sound like a wheel issue. You might open er up and grease to solve it.

Also consider putting a drop of lube of choice onto each nipple so that it goes into the rim. It solved a mystery for me.

It could be a slight crack at an eyelet or two as well, so check for that.

Once I had that tic tic tic and it was the nut on the inner tube valve that I took off as soon as I got home.
