Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sat: went out to W. CT near my friend's house and did one of his rides. 63mi 4600' climbing. Getting ready for my first gravel event of the year and this was similar except 99.5% on road and about 1000 less climbing. But the legs felt good for the distance and that is all i was really looking for. Stayed dry for most of it cept a short shower near the end that was really nothing. Good views from the tops of the ridges we went up and around a few lakes. Saw some riders previewing the course for Ironman CT that is coming up next month (we hit a few of the roads on the course by coincidence but I have ridden that course it before and recognized where we were.)

Sat - Took out two bikes today.

First off I took out the Davidson Impulse while I finally had some calm conditions. Did 18.9 miles the first hour then fell off pace a bit as the winds kicked in. Best pace of the year though which tells how much wind we've been having. Legs were actually already blasted to today by hard rides against heavy winds the previous days. I did make one stop on this leg to grab a picture of the Davidson out on the road. I do love this pink bike, it's always so fast. Did a little over 23 miles on this one.

Then I swung by the house and swapped out for the Evans bike which I had worked on some earlier in the morning. Swapping wheels and saddle gave me a 3 lb savings on this one. It did feel livelier on the road. Winds were blowing hard by now so I just cruised around for a little more than 17 miles stopping a lot to take pictures.

The valley is continuing to green up as the snow melts and flows through.

Went for a brilliant 115k ride today. What made it brilliant you ask? I'll tell you!
  • Sun was out, which was great since the weather guys were calling for cloud
  • I dressed just right for the climate. I wasn't too hot, or to cold
  • I fueled just ride for the ride
  • After not being on my bike for a week (damn work getting in the way of life) I felt pretty good.

Yesterday I bought a new CAAD 12 and took it out for a 13 mi. shakedown ride. This is an amazing bike at a killer price.

Sunday - I got out today for a lazy 30 miles. Took the old Greg Lemond Ventoux since my old body was tired and I wanted to be pampered on the ride. This bike is now sporting a plush set of tubulars to go along with the cushy bar tape, Brooks saddle and compliant frame. Stopped in one of the drier areas of the valley to snap some pics today. As you can see, the melt is really going strong right now.

No pictures this time, just some riding...

Friday: A nice evening ride became a bit adventurous when my RD cable snapped partway up a climb. Seeing that I was not going to get through the upcoming 10% grade (or attempt a roadside repair out in the country with sunset approaching), I sucked it up and walked the half mile to the top. I'd been meaning to do a bit more high gear/low cadence work - 15 miles in 50x11 did the trick! 33 miles, 1,961'.

Saturday: Missed a ride with friends due to bike repair; instead, did a nice solo spin. 46.9 miles, 2,290', and a good (for me) average of 17.3 MPH.

Six miles Friday, to and from physical therapy. Snoozed most of the rest of the day.

41 miles Saturday with a friend. He was trying a new-to-him TT/tri-bike. That got miserable after the first 20 miles or so. Probably needs a better saddle. I was pretty comfy on the Noisy Cricket, early '90s Trek 5900, especially after adding better bar wrap.

Sunday... snoozed. My body seems to be telling me something. I'll figure out what after I wake up.

Screw it spring is over and summer has started in spite of the calendar. Already high 80's and humid. This weekend was moderately windy too. Saturday I wanted to dispose of some household chemicals properly so I parked at the Upper Tampa Bay trail (the dump is right next door) and rode around the area. I went to Philippe Park and a short trail in Clearwater. Then did a few more miles on the main trail. 42 miles total. Sunday legs felt like crap, but did 40 miles to Weedon Is. and back.

No pictures. I rode on the flats form the light house to San Simeon (so the wife could hang) on Saturday. On sunday i rode about 15 miles north along the Big Sur coastline and back. i basically had over 3000 feet of climbing 400 feet at a time. It was glorious and i got out early enough that highway 1 went from deserted to moderate traffic.

Wow. Incredible. If the water is warm I'd have been tempted to get in for a quick swim.
