Irritating click.

Hey all. I ride a Crumpton with Campy Record 10 speed purchased in 2004 , new super torque chai wheel set.
‘I have a click, seems towards the front end and right side. It comes with pedal position of right crank from 2-3 o’clock. Sometimes also on left but mostly right. When moving along on the flats without hard effort it is not present. When the pressure increases or I start going uphill it comes on. Present in or out of saddle, large or small chain wheel and any of rear sprockets. All bolts , screws etc tight, no sign of chain or wheel rub on front deraillure cage. Any ideas what could be causing it?

What happens when you stand up to pedal?

Have you checked pedal or crank bearings? Loose or sealed?

Check the wheels for cracks around the spoke holes. I've had these generate odd, hard to find, sounds.
Also, check the cassette lock ring. It needs to be quite tight.

My last mystery click ended up being a hairline stress fracture in my crank arm. I figured this out when I picked myself up from the road following catastrophic failure. Although unlikely to be your issue, I would advise ruling out a damaged crank arm. Examine them under a bright light with a good magnifier.

I tightened all my headset bolts and that solved it.

One of the knocks on Campy Ultra Torque (not super torque) Record/Chorus cranks is that they depend on a wavy washer to take up the slack, and this is sometimes not sufficient. The result is a clicking sound as you describe. The solution to this, if this is indeed the problem, is to get a set of spacers in various thicknesses and add them in place of the wavy washer until you get just the right amount where there is no binding and no slack. In the old loose bearing days you would adjust a cup to get to that exact same place, but there are no cups like that in Ultra Torque.

The good news is that you don't need any special bike tools (or worse, tools that are Campy manufactured), the bad news is that a set of washers costs money. You will need a very long 10mm allen key, best with a 3/8" drive so that it can be used with a torque wrench. Yea, not everyone has a torque wrench and you could maybe get away without it. A 3/8" drive socket wrench will do.

Google the installation instructions and you'll get some good info. RogueMechanics has a detailed explanation of the problem and the solution.
