Second Positive for Tyler Hamilton leads to Retirement

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Second Positive for Tyler Hamilton leads to Retirement

https://velonews.com/article/90740/ty...t-this-morning

American national road champion Tyler Hamilton is the subject of a new doping investigation, one which could possibly result in his life-time banishment from the sport.

The 38-year-old Hamilton, however, is expected to announce at a news conference this morning that he plans to retire from cycling.

I don't get it.

"DHEA supplements are sometimes used as muscle-building or performance-enhancing drugs by athletes. However, a randomized placebo-controlled trial found that DHEA supplementation had no effect on lean body mass, strength, or testosterone levels."

"DHEA and DHEAS are readily available in the United States, where they are marketed as over-the-counter dietary supplements. A 2004 review in the American Journal of Sports Medicine concluded that "The marketing of this supplement's effectiveness far exceeds its science." Because DHEA is converted to androstenedione and then testosterone, it has two chances to aromatize into estrogen- estrone from androstenedione, and estradiol from testosterone. As such, it is possible for increases in estrogen levels more than testosterone in men."

snip from the article: "Hamilton then appealed his suspension to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, where he lost in a unanimous decision. Although he has never confirmed the total cost of litigating the case, sources have estimated that Hamilton spent nearly $1 million in legal fees in that effort.
His suspension ended in September of 2006."...

a good recap of the past few years there, and it sure makes the whole mess, and the rider in it, look pretty stupid. Couldn't he ride without all that screwing around? And why blow a million on a lost cause anyway, obvious to anyone?

most of his career he's been surrounded by suspicion, including Operation Puerto. When there is the persistent smell of shiat, there usually is shiat.

So does that mean before I criticize Tyler I have to cheat my way into an Olympic medal and then spend the two years of my suspension pontificating as to how I did nothing wrong?

Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck...

Considering the relative insensitivity of doping controls, i.e. the fact that there are several athletes out there who admitted to doping without ever testing positive, it would seem that someone who keeps coming up positive and generating elaborate excuses is just flat-out guilty.

The fact that ol' Tyler just seems to always be the one with the contaminated vitamins is just a little fishy, dontcha think?

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

No, you just have to kick him in the roid nads and take his shoes, then walk a mile in them. Just catch him off the bike, otherwise good luck walking a mile in cycling shoes..

If you've formed this opinion having read all the available information, including the attending circumstances, then so be it.

But, there are a lot of people who read a headline, skim an article, and pass judgment.

FWIW, I had you pegged as someone who would try to get as big a picture as possible before developing an opinion.

You're not as wise or as witty as you think you are. Having raced against guys who dope I can tell you it sucks, and they're worthy of condemnation. Your lack of experience is showing.

i'm not talking about Tyler's history as a whole here, but rather this isolated incident.

Also, as I said in a previous thread, I have not yet developed an opinion on the matter. But from what I can tell so far:
  • Tyler was diagnosed as clinically depressed
  • DHEA doesn't offer any significant performance gains

I'm not saying he should be let off the hook; but maybe the torches and pitchforks are a bit much this early in the game.

You're right. And knowing what I know now, i.e. that there are friggin' Cat 3's in MABRA who are on the juice, it's become increasingly clear that doping is the rule rather than the exception.
