And let me tell ya, Portugal has some hills. Not quite as serious in the south as farther north, but still some hills.

I was on the Galena Trail in New Denver and met a couple traveling around the world. I Could not believe the amount of gear they were both hauling. Their front panniers were larger than my rear ones. And their rear pannier were ENORMOUS. No idea where they got those things. They also had these large plastic canisters stacked on their rear racks. The bikes were built like tanks. I just could not imagine hauling all of that around the world.

2x4? There is a surf board there, but I don't see a 2x4 .Unless you're looking at the fence it's propped against.

They all look more sensible than the guy I saw headed to Florida on a fully loaded bike and wearing a fully loaded backpack. Pic somewhere that I'll post.

I've been really surprised at the amount of gear carried by people I've met on this current tour (Spokane to Patagonia). I've seen lots of people with two sets of back rollers or equivalent, usually with a duffle or something strapped across the back as well. Probably 99% of the other tourers I've come across are carrying more than me, and I had thought that I was carrying a lot. It's been really interesting to see other systems/setups.

The picture in the original post probably looks heavier than it is. It’s a set of rear panniers and a dry bag trailer set-up. The stuff on top of it appears to just be a surf board, wake board(or similar), and a guitar. All three of those are bulky, but light weight items, basically made of foam or hollow. It’s still more than I’d carry, but probably not more weight than a lot of people on this forum are hauling. I doubt it’s too much more than four large panniers and a big handlebar bag.
