Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

He's a character called Danbo from a Japanese manga. I never read them, but if you browse around Flickr a lot of people use the figures to add some personality to shots. That one is certainly more interesting than just a shot of an unused saddle.

I have a nicer one coming today, with the boxes marked Amazon.co.jp.

You ride, you post, so yes. The saddle is unnecessary, but nice.

No place like home!

I have been spending time on a different hobby forum the last few months. It is interesting but hard to make friends. Threads like Addiction are strictly forbidden. All posts must be very narrowly focused on the original topic and close just as soon as an answer to the original question is obtained. Having a good time with a topic is frowned upon. I think I need a little dose of BF.

Just returned from 10 days in Ecuador and cruising the Galápagos Islands on a 100-passenger
ship and 14-passenger Zodiacs for the daily excursions. I am embarrassed how badly I mismanaged the photography aspect. I was thinking of scenery and took shorter lenses. But of course the real subjects were the wildlife, which except for the giant tortoises was mostly small and/or far away. Some long glass would have been the right answer, but I had none. I did the best I could under the circumstances, but didn’t get much to be proud of.

All in all it was a terrific trip which I highly recommend. Celebrity took charge of us from the minute we landed in Quito until we departed 10 days later. Two nights at the JW Marriott with sight seeing and all meals, then a charter flight over to the islands to meet the boat, 7-nights on board with morning and afternoon excursion/exploration activities every day, then a flight back to the city and a last night at the Marriott with another full day of touring before flying home. They never dropped the ball. Every single thing was taken care of in a fully professional manner.

Houston weather has really sucked this winter. Constantly wet and overcast. I’m hoping for some decent riding weather going forward.

I apologize for disappearing on you guys. Just needed a break.

Yeah, no locking anything on that knife. I carry a little spear-point folding knife at the bike shop. One-handed operation and a locking blade.

in other news/update:
1. the awesome shovel is still awesome and safely stored in an undisclosed location in the Atlanta area.
2. Continued Excellence at work is being demonstrated daily.
3. Yesterday's post work ride was good. I am already at my mid-season form in terms of speed on a 75% target heartrate. I realize that's less reliable of a benchmark versus a power meter but it's all I've got.
4. Coffee is being consumed in preparation for the day.
5. Most importantly a nice ride this afternoon is on the schedule.

My power however sucks. I don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows and I don't need a power meter to know that my power sucks. I will begin in earnest working on that. pain will ensue.

It might be a two cup morning for me, as I find myself resisting the urge to go for a ride. I still have digestive discomfort, and swore off any activity through the weekend, and I'm sticking to it.

The power was out yesterday afternoon, for a couple hours. A minor inconvenience. Then this morning I read that the entire peninsula was out, and Quintana Roo authorities were struggling with traffic control. I'm sure Merida was too. There are a lot of traffic lights in Q.R. And a lot of traffic to go along with them. Merida, on the other hand, is mostly gridlocked anyway, so it might not have been quite so rough.

Montezuma's revenge or another euphemism? Get well for your trip. it would suck if it hampers your plans.

Good and valid question.
3 reasons in no particular order:
1. I have the need for speed

What is this, "at your age and fitness level" comment? Should I feel insulted? See #3 above.

My biggest anxiety about this upcoming bike tour is the traffic. I haven't ridden in US traffic conditions, except to do errands, and one organized ride, in 15 years or so. It moves a lot faster there than here and, I have to assume, there is more of it. Much, much more. And they will consider me to be less than human. I will only have one metro area to go through--the corridor between Akron and Canton. When I was a ute, it was open country. I doubt it still is. I have made a point of checking hotel availability in that area, in case a sudden retreat is required.

If you are thin skinned, you are welcome to feel insulted. I have only a rudimentary idea of your age. You post your fitness level for all the world to see.
