Just thinking
I am converting my MTB to a commuter, and gearing is fine for now, front is 42-34-24, would it be possible at some point to go 50-40-30 by swapping the rings, would I need a new crank (currently Shimano TX-70 alloy triple ), how about a new FD, new shifters?
Can't tell if the rings are replacable, as www.shimano.com seems to be suffering from Java Erroritis right now. There are no bolts, but it looks like screws from the back side....
Anyone have any ideas, is this doable?

I'm pretty sure you crank is a very low-line Shimano MTB type and the rings may be rivited on so you may be out of luck for changing them. In any event, chain rings are often priced so high that if you want more road oriented gearing, it would probably be less expensive to buy an entire road crank. Nashbar has a triple "Treking" crank (48/38/28) complete for $75 and the needed ISIS bottom bracket for $25. Look here:

You will likely also need a new front derailleur. You rear shifter will work fine but the front may not.
