I've frozen mine from time to time with nothing bad to report. Well... besides the fact that ice water is about the worst thing that I ever thought of putting in my system while riding. Wanna talk about causing cramps? I now try to keep my water about body temperature- I can drink no matter how hard I'm exerting myself and not feel any ill effects.

The best thing is to use a special Camelbak ice tray. Put the Camelbak full of water in the fridge overnight, then in the morning shove it full of ice cylinders. It's ready to drink and will stay cold for hours. Yeah, I remember 50 years ago trainers recommended not drinking at all during exercise and especially not cold water. And light was a wave in the postulated ether.

I've also read that taking in cold water makes it harder for the body to processed and that Luke warm water is actually absorbed faster by the body than ice cold water.
for weight loss they say to drink ice cold water as it forces your body to burn extra cals to bring it up to temp for absorption as well
although I'm sure it is a minimal amount why waste the calories heating up water when your muscles need them to perform

I prefer my water to be at or around body temp... not cold not too warm as well

Can you freeze it? YES YOU CAN! When in the middle east, we would work like crazy to get the bladders in the freezer the night before. Fill it about 1/2 way and remove the air -- that way the bladder does not burst. If you can, keep air in the tube instead of water.

+1 what DP said. Including the air in the tube part. Abandon hope of accomplishing that part if you forget (1st time) or have family that are incapable of replacing something in the freezer EXACTLY as it was. (2+) Don't fill bag all the way unless you want to pressure test the bladder seams. If the tube does freeze up, mother nature will take care of it by the time you need it. ICE WATER on a Virginia century in late August - PRICELESS

I have not been backbacking in a few years but when I was, putting the bladder about 1/3 full in the freezer over night worked fine for me. Then filling the bladder to the top with cold water from the fridge. Ice cubes don't last nearly as long and cools the water more than I like.

You will drink all the water then you will have a block of ice you can’t drink. Ice cold water gives me a splitting headache so I only add a few ice cubes to keep the water coolish. Experiment and see what you like best.

Apparently there's a lot of pseudo-scientific quackery and misinformation about whether or not cold or body temp or warm water or whatever is "better" for you, "absorbed faster", "emptied by the stomach faster into the small intestines where it is absorbed" and so on, depending on what is being measured and what is subjectively "better". I even saw a reference to the "energy" used by the body to warm the water to body temperature can hurt performance!
Unfortunately my quick Google search didn't result in anything definitive (or from an obviously reputable source). This would be a great research topic for an "ig nobel prize".

I've never done it to my Camelbak bladder. I just add a few ice cubes before a ride. I've also lined my Camelbak with some of that insulation padding they use for food. Keeps the water cooler for a longer period.

It is an American thing to ice every drink. In most of the World people drink drinks just at room temp (I realize the rest of the World is Americanizing in this regard..... but not based on actual hydration science). In Germany a cold beer is one from the basement at basement temperature.

Yes, no problem. Just don't fill it more than about 80% full to allow for expansion. I don't generally find it necessary as ice works well enough for most rides. But on a long ride in hot weather I'll freeze the second bottle to have cool water 3 hours in.
