Was sent a new Raleigh Preston single speed "vintage" bike so built it up this morning. Just to make it heavier I added a full on basket in the rear to carry stuff. Did a 30 miler w/ 5 Seattle hills and passed quite a few Rapha riders (ring ring - looking sharp boys!). Quite a bit different than my Look 695 or Lynskey Helix Pro disc for sure but still a blast.

It has been a hectic Spring, and I've had precious little time to ride. Other than the occasional neighborhood cruise, I haven't ridden much since the Lake Pepin Tour.

But yesterday I rode a little over 25 miles on the trails north of Hastings. For this ride, I chose my Sequoia 650b conversion:


This bike has a wonderful vintage Deore drivetrain, and the 40mm tires provide for a nice, cushy ride.

The sculpture garden has some new installations. I feared the conditions (93°F, very humid, 100°+ heat index) might be too extreme for Mr. Walrus here:



But he didn't seem to mind. Koo Koo Kachoo!

Despite the oppressive heat, it was a beautiful day, and it felt great to be back in the saddle.

Rode my Bianchi on the rail-trail from Cambridge to Paris today. It was a nice ride and he humidity wasn't too bad. Got some NOS Suntour Cyclone components for her and will be putting them on her soon.

Just got home about a 1/2 hour ago... I am totally soaked in sweat so bad, I look like I jumped in a lake!!

Virginia has "infamous" weather where it appears to be relatively nice and around 82° around 9:30am. But then all of the sudden by about 10:00am, the temp soars to 92° out of nowhere!

Dummy me should have ridden my C&V '85 Fuji at 6:30 or 7:00am like most normal riders. *sigh* live and learn....


14.95 miles total in 1 hr, 1 min, in the morning heatwave.




I stopped along Blair Rd near Patterson, guzzled my water bottle, and took this quick photo before heading back home.

A mixed terrain ride today up Mt. Tamalpais. About 30% dirt and 70% pavement. We still call them "gravel bikes" around here even though we have hardly any gravel: It's all dirt, exposed rocks, and roots.

43 miles, 15.3 mph average on a run up the coast from Ventura to Summerland, just south of Santa Barbara. I rode my $20 CL project '78 Raleigh Super Course. There are a couple of short steepish hills, and the 42/34 best gear worked just fine. The 52t big ring was just right for blasting along the flat sections. Fun ride and a great day to ride, so I got a few beauty shots of the Raleigh.

July 4th ride up to Lake Forest and points northwest. 66 miles, temps in the low 90s.

Had to deal with "parade interference" in a few towns and Old Elm was dug up with no way through.

New Michelin Pro 4 on the rear. The $2 rummage sale Vittoria was done after 2500+ miles.

20 miles this morning on my 1974 Motobecane Grand Touring. Windy, muggy, and gray outside. I did stop for a cold brew coffee at the halfway point of my ride. This 45 year old bike groans and creaks as much as its 52 year old rider!

Took the Basso SL out on a quick 28 miler this morning, Got in on a few fast group rides and sucked their wheels for a few miles.( I said Thank You). Alot of Pasadena Club riders on the bike trail today.

18.8 miles on the green '73 Super Course that I saved from the scrap heap 3 years ago. So glad I did. It's a great ride. Versatile too. I just put a bigger 52t gear on the front to replace the 50. I have other vintage bikes with 52s, and really like how they ride. I rode up thru Porter Ranch, north of LA, and down thru Chatsworth Park South. I saw an equestrian trail, and decided to go for it. No horses visible, nor any "No bicycles" signs. It was fun, no problem on the Pasela 28s either, though I couldn't try the 52t chain ring. Worked great on the flats though. Pasadena Vintage ride tomorrow, south end of Rose Bowl, at the Acquatic Center. Come on down if you're in the area. DVR the TdF and ride!

I finally finished my winter project bike: a `49 Raleigh Clubman. I built this up as a patina preservation project, and that is detailed elsewhere (For the Love of English 3-speeds).

Today I rode it, first around the neighborhood, and then into downtown Saint Paul. I was going to the Lower Town Bike Shop because they had a headbadge that will work on this bike until I find the one that came with it.

Lower Town Bike Shop is located in the Union Depot. I didn't take any photos outside, because the sun was almost directly overhead. But inside, I got a few good ones. Like this shot of the "Light Bright Wall Mural":



The Depot is huge, and really beautiful after the restoration several years ago:



Photography is difficult in there because of the low light level. But here and there I found some light I could play with:

The Tour de France started today in Brussels for a special observance of the 50th anniversary of Eddy Merckx's first Tour victory, so it seemed appropriate today to ride 50 miles on a Merckx.

I've been trying to get back up to 50-60 miles a week. Did 20 miles today on the Iron Horse Trail that runs from Pleasanton to Martinez east of the San Francisco Bay.

I like the section that runs from Peasant Hill to San Ramon. It runs through wooded areas and wooded suburban neighborhoods with lots of side trails that go up into the hills on both sides including up to Mt. Diablo.

For the past several months my 1967 Peugeot PX-10 has been my main ride. I got it back in 2007 as an all original barn bike with an extra set of clinchers. I hadn't been on it for 10 years and was getting ready to sell it. Now that I've put some miles on it again I may hang on to it.

Never got around to doing a complete overhaul and cleanup but every time I have it out, I do a little more work on it.

Recently I switched from the 27" wheels (pictured) that came with the bike to 700c wheels running 25mm tires. I also replaced the Simplex Prestige front derailleur with a NOS one, polished the Stronglight 93 cranks plus replaced the Mafac brake pads.

Last weekend I rode north, this weekend I rode south. Two very different rides!

The prior ride went up the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. Total miles were around 48, of which about 30 miles was mixed dirt, gravel, singletrack and a few backyards to the dam. The 35mm Compass tires ate it up.








Today I planned to ride down to Coney Island with noglider, but our schedules didn't work out, nor did the temperatures. When I rode over the Williamsburg Bridge I knew I'd be cooked if I went all the way so I turned north along what Bike Snob NYC calls the' Hipster Silk Road' - the bike lanes through Williansburg, Greenpoint and Long Island City. I rode over the Queensboro Bridge and back uptown to home. It turned out to be a great day to stop along the East River parks that I haven't checked out before. Probably due to this being the end of a holiday week, the streets and parks weren't very busy.
