GT triple triangle. what do I have?
Just picked this up, and I'm not too sure what I have. The dropouts say 7005 and H4H08695 . Lovingly welded out of aluminum, and reeally light. Zaskar? Pantera? Every Avalanche I've seen has the gusset under the downtube.
Not sure what I'm gonna do to it yet. My heart wants to make it a BMX style cruiser. I love the bare aluminum; GT sure made some pretty frames in the 90s...

Also, what kind of deraileur would I need to look at if I went that route? I'm kinda new to bikes with gears.

Could also be a backwoods.
You already got the 1x crank. Could keep it cheap and go 1x9.

It is tough to know for sure because it is impossible to know if the components are original, I'm pretty sure the stem isn't. My guess is a 1994 Avalanche AL. The 1994 had an LX crank and it was 7 speed. 1993 had a DX Crank. I think 1995 had Parallax hubs.
You can go onto Retrobike and check out the catalogs.
I had an early 90's no model steel GT and did a lot of research trying to figure out the model, so I'm familiar with where to find the old catalogs.

Odd that they would put rack eyelets on a competition oriented bike , but the zaskar had rack eyelets too
The pantera was aluminum, avalanche was steel in that time frame, (never mind, they had an AL avalanche as well, just looked at the 93 catalog on Retrobike)

So, from what I've gathered, Pantera and Backwoods frames are the same (which I believe this is), and Avalanche and Arrowhead frames are the same (with the gusset on the dt). Zaskar frames, with the flat end cap, and diiferent serial#s are unique in the GT line. the H4H.... serial # on mine means it's a 1994 made in Taiwan.
Correct?
I'm really torn between putting a 1x8 gear setup or ss conversion. 90% of it's time will be on the road, and I kinda want it to be more than just a neighborhood cruiser. But dynamically. traditionally, and aesthetically....my BMX heart beats ss.

Progressing nicely. Mounted new 1.75 tires, Put some Fly Racing 5.5" BMX cruiser bars, and swapped the junk wheels for a slightly less junk set. Since this set has the cassette already on, I'm gonna stick a derailer on for the time being.

.....And finished.
My long distance urban assault bike. What I always imagined a 'hybrid' should be. Cruises very tight, steady and determined. MUCH lighter than my other bikes; I'm guessing around 24-25#. The geometry is perfect for the short BMX guy that I am. I had my lbs do the derailer (thanks Bike Farm) as I wanted it done correctly, and I know nothing about gears. I think the piston stem looks pretty boss, and I'm pretty happy with the way it all turned out. Up next will be a simple seatpost clamp, and maybe some Victor style beartrap pedals.
Took a few quick pics before sundown:

Very nice. You may or may not want a chain guide. On smooth surfaces it is probably not an issue. But since you rode BMX, you might get the urge to hit a little dirt and you don't want to drop the chain.

Test of time
How are you liking this bike after a couple years? Came across this thread, and I’m interested in building a 1x8 with my triple triangle as well.
