Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It still is. It’s actually cheaper for us to drive there (even with tolls) and pick up lobster. We bring it gone when we go to our house in Marblehead. We also stop at Treehouse and stock up on a few cases each trip

I haven't done any gravel riding on any of my bikes, the immediately local stuff seems to be getting paved over, and the stuff out West of here is beyond what any of my road bikes can handle.
Lighter bikes certainly feel more responsive to thrashing, so that could be a big part of it. I've also mentioned this many times in the various "rotating weight doesn't matter!!!" threads, but tire/wheel weight does matter a *lot* when it comes to handling and feel (though not necessarily with regard to speed, particularly for solo endeavors). So yeah, a feedback loop could certainly explain the speed differences.

So, when does a sail stop being a sail and just become a vertical wing?

Fast bikes are fast.

I've trained on the old Puch before, just to see. Same power, I was slow, but I was comfortable. Sitting up is much more comfortable, in a relative sense, because I'm not uncomfortable on my newer bikes, but I am ridiculously faster.

Those dragsters you see ripping themselves apart? At 300 mph, there's 8,000 pounds of downforce on the rear, and 4,000 pounds on the front. They're designed to bow in the middle, but not that much. Wind is wicked

When it's a rigid vertical wing. Soft sails will always be required for distance racing, where sail area has to be easy to adjust for conditions.

What about wheel lateral rigidity? Trek has 36 spoke, 3 cross wheels. I can see them move a lot side to side when I'm out of the saddle. The Schwinn has 24-28(?) spoke 2x wheels, which I believe should be more laterally stiff than the Trek's.

Sometimes I feel that the Trek is telling me "I'm a touring bike, you idiot. Put a triple and bar-ends on me and stop worrying about going fast."

Ya got me, but anything that makes it feel like more ponderous work to flog the bike back and forth is no good IMO.

Prolly.

Which means that you should get a really go-fast bike to functionally replace it.

I take my kids to the Maritime Museum in Newport News pretty much every year, and they have the boat from that come-from-behind America's Cup victory on display there. I've looked at it... but I should prolly really look at it next time.

Try coasting downhill and see if one is faster. I can coast faster on the Gunnar than the Seven because it is lower at the BB, has a lower position, and has deep drop bars.

I think the Trek is a bit faster downhill. I've hit around 40-45 on both bikes but I have to pedal for that on the Schwinn. Trek is most definitely lower, by a lot. I have to keep pedal strike in mind.

There's an e-bike converter system that can be used on folder bikes. LOL
