Substituting a rear axle with a different thread pitch
Don't know exactly how I managed this, but I bought a new rear thru axle for my Zinn Clydesdale......I just wanted a backup axle.... which is fine for length but it is a 1.5mm pitch. My original axle is 1.75mm pitch......The frame doesn't have a captive nut / threads, just an aluminum nut. Looks exactly like the 1.5mm Shimano style nut you can buy......
The new one came with the proper/ matching 1.5mm Shimano style nut.
Since the nut is not captive in the frame, is there any reason if and when I replace, that I can't use the 1.5 tp axle and nut......?

Does the new nut fit the frame/dropout correctly? If so than I suspect the new through axle will work with it's nut. But it also seems that a simple test by you will answer your question. Try dry fitting the TA and nut. Andy

Yes I did fit it and it seems to fit fine.....the replacement axle is 2 mm shorter, but information I've read from Robert Axle Project says +-2mm is ok. just looking for any reason there might be any issues that I haven't thought of.....
I like the idea of doing this because the "nut" on the new axle is 1.5mm tp and if I ever lose the original 1.75 tp "nut", it is a weird size to replace....I see them on Ebay but they come from China....nothing here in the US...

If you can get cones for the new axle, with a taper that matches the old one, and locknuts, why the hell not?

My OCD took over and I bought a 1.75tp axle, so thanks for the responses........I found 1.75tp Shimano type nuts on Ebay from China, so a bought a couple as spares as well......
I'm sure the 1.5tp axle and nuts would be fine......
I went down the rabbit hole of pros and cons of coarse vs fine thread pitch, but the difference between 1.5 and 1.75 is so minimal I doubt any difference......

Pretty sure he was confused, thinking this was a conventional ball bearing /cone axle. I probably should have made a refrernce to thru axle in the title of the thread......
