Pressure inside a CO2 cartridge?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Correct.

If you are interested, check the phase diagram (1atm is about equal to 15psi) : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ges_of_CO2.png

In the absence of extreme temperatures, you would need to have temperatures of nearly -60*C (-76*F) to get solid CO2.

Hang on a second, doesn't discharging the liquid phase from the canister produce exactly those kinds of temps? Like a CO2 fire extinguisher, for example? So isn't it true that CO2 canisters CAN produce dry ice if discharged in certain orientations? If you google "making dry ice" that's exactly the kind of method that you find, you're just not producing solid blocks of it.

"At 70 degrees F, CO2 obtains a gas pressure of 852.8 psi". I wonder what the pressure is in a black seat bag when it is 100 degrees. Has anyone ever had one blow up? I try to avoid explosions in the rectal area.

I think the cartridge is designed to vent itself if the pressure gets too high.

The quote assumes that liquid and vapor are in equilibrium with each other (saturated conditions). One could have lower pressures (superheated vapor) or higher pressures (compressed liquid). As a practical matter you would never have all liquid because they don't fill these things to that level. One could have lower pressures, of course. That's what happens after you use it to fill a tire.

At 100 F you are above the critical temperature and hence there is no saturation pressure.

Anything like that has a significant safety factor built in. CO2 canisters tend to have burst pressures of at least 6-7000 psi. You're safe. The disk at the mouth will blow first and dump the gas in a less dangerous way, as long as the cartridge isn't in a tube or something that'll turn into a cannon.

Was wondering after using the co2 do you return home and let out the co and refill with air?

sorry if this pisses ppl off, but i'm new to this. anyways, say you get a flat, so you take your tire off and you either patch up the tube or replace the tube on the side of the road, but when it comes to filling it up, how many of these small portable CO2 canisters does it take to fill up the inner tube to the correct pressure (100-120psi)?

I don't. Since I pump up the tire every day before the ride, any co2 lost is replaced by air.

The cartridge manufacturers have tables for the expected psi for a given tube/tire situation. For a "road tire" genuine innovations says the 16 gram cartridge creates 130 psi. Assuming you don't flub any of it, of course.

I've measured the pressure from 16 gram carts from both G.I. and Planet Bike in a 23mm tire (22.5mm actual) and I consistently get 100 psi. So the charts are a bit optimistic. YMMV, but it was repeatable and I'm almost positive I'm not wasting any.

Just get a pressure guage and shove one on it and see what it says. Sounds like it could work.

700-850 I believe, I paintball so we track the pressure to make sure we regulate them. We use this for our stock paintball marker.

Not lower than 650 for sure

Lesson for those who missed: You can indeed say "ass", but context is important, and there are a bunch of other words you can't say.
