I've never really understood the knife fascination, what do you gain with something boutique over something like a production Wusthof (which is the chef knife I have)? It stays sharp and cuts everything I need it to - I've never had the want for anything more. Although I suppose the same logic could be applied to bicycles, a bike's a bike, right? 
Is it one of those things that you don't understand until you've actually used one?

I really need to get the thru-axle dropouts for the rear on my Canfield. Twice now I've pulled the rear wheel out of alignment, and I don't really want to tighten the skewer any more than it already is - I've broken them before.

Nova had an excellent special called "Secrets of the Viking Sword". They had a guy reverse-engineer how these were built. Sword-making presents many of the same challenges as with making high quality steel bicycle frames. You want lightness, you want strength, you want flex (to keep the sword from breaking off during battle) but not too much flex. In essence, you want durability, and you want the metal in your sword lighter and stronger than your opponent's, for maximum tactical advantage.
The techniques used to produce these swords, I found very interesting. Lot of heat treating, pounding out, and adding of special ingredients at critical times, and building of specialized kilns capable of reaching extremely high temps. Must have seemed like sorcery at the time. I think a lot of the knowledge gained from building swords during the middle ages was later used in developing materials like Reynolds 531, which was also used by the Brits during WWII to build strong, lightweight airplane frames, and helped win the war for the Allies.
