Shimano PTFE or Jagwire Road Elite cables/housings

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Shimano PTFE or Jagwire Road Elite cables/housings

About to replace the chain and cassette on my Cannondale CAAD12/Ultegra to change cassette ratios. At the same time, I am planning to install new cables and housings. It's down to Jagwire Road Elite Sealed and Shimano PTFE cables and housings. I already have Jagwire Road Elite for the brakes and am happy with the result. A nearby LBS recommended the Shimano product.

Any thoughts/comments from those who have tried both?

The PTFE coating on Shimano cables tends to peel and flake off, which can gum up inside the housings(actually causing increased friction).

I have a good experience with the Jagwire cables (elite link). It had smoother cable pull feel overall compared to the shimano cables it replaced. I would buy the same if ever I need to replace them.

Adding, it looks great as well.

Shimano Optislick for shifting, Jagwire or anything else for brakes. Haven't had any peeling or other problems.

But cables are cables and if you like one brand, then stick with it.

Pretty much this.

I have Shimano with the optislick crap and at what I estimate to be 1200 miles, I and the LBS agree I'm probably in need of cable replacements, at least for the RD. They said the regular, non opti should go for 3000ish miles.

Me neither. From my experience optislick doesnt peel or clog the cables. Its worth noting Shimano has at least two different coatings. Optislick and the more expensive "polymer coating" for Ultegra and DA. Maybe its the polymer type that peels and everybody just assumes all coated shimano cables are crap. I dunno. From my experience most non shimano oem (often JAG wire) cables are far inferior to the normal shimano stuff.

EDIT:

Shimano says:

"OPTISLICK
Shimano OPTISLICK shift cables offer outstanding shift performance and impressive cable longevity for a wide range of components. From Shimano 105 groups down to entry-level ALTUS and CLARIS components, OPTISLICK technology provides smooth and reliable shifting for riders of all levels. While low-end cables are made of steel, Shimano’s OPTISLICK cables are produced from corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Then, the cables are electrically coated to reduce friction and extend the lifespan considerably. OPTISLICK cables are Shimano’s longest-lasting option, designed to ensure the best possible value and user experience.

POLYMER
Shimano delivers the fastest shifting possible with its premium Polymer Coated Cables. Paired with Shimano's race-level XTR, DURA-ACE, and ULTEGRA component groups, these low friction cables deliver top of the line shifting performance.

The Polymer Coated Cables feature inner stainless steel wires that are wrapped with ultra-slick polymer tubes. This polymer coating creates a series of tiny ridges, which reduces the surface area that is in contact with the outer cable housing – resulting in the fastest, lowest-friction shifting possible.

The polymer strands on these cables wear out slightly faster than the cables themselves and can increase friction as they age. That's why Shimano includes the premium Polymer Coated Cables with its race-oriented groups, where riders typically replace their cables more frequently."

Good Info, @Racing Dan. I started with the plastikote cables and they did indeed gum up my housings. Not worth the millisecond I might have saved on any particular shift.

I like Jagwire but I am running the Shimano polymer coated cables at the moment thanks to a great deal I found online. They are very good and no fraying/peeling so far.
