Question Why are add-on handbikes for wheelchairs so expensive?

Hello,

I know nothing about wheelchairs and so-called "electric handbikes", ie. electric third wheels that attach to wheelchairs.

A bit of googling shows that manufacturers include Batec, Triride, Rio Mobility, a2j, TeamHybrid, Davinci, etc.

On the web, someone is trying to collect money to buy one that cost over… $8,000

Considering a motor + battery + controller kit to electrify a plain bicycle only costs ~$1,000… why do electric handbikes cost so much?

Is there an easy way to come up with a ~$1-2,000 DIY solution?

Thank you.

Several factors. Primarily it has to be much more reliable than anything on a bike. When the user's chair breaks down deep in the woods, he cannot walk out. Dying is a real possibility. So are the lawsuits that will shut down the business. Also, if it is a medical device, all kinds of regulatory stuff comes into play.

Hmmpf...

The Dragonfly/Firefly:

https://riomobility.com/shop/

$1795 to $2895. depending on the model.

A little more if you wish to buy a couple of spare batteries.

The cost isn't too unexpected for what I expect is a rather limited market. Supply & Demand Issues. And, probably quite a custom design/build.

Lithium batteries are still expensive, although I have to wonder if there are options to get them cheaper. For example some awesome batteries in Electric Cars.

This obviously competes with the mobility scooters which are more single purpose designed, but not as good for say a small do-all device.

I frequently see full handcycle bikes (no wheelchair) for sale, often for reasonable prices.

My thought as well. However well intended, there's always folks who take advantage.

If the thing really makes a real difference for someone struggling with the disability... Then it could be worth every penny, and then some.

I agree. Sadly the manufacturer takes advantage of this to the max.

I found the Dragonfly/Firefly prices online and they appear to be much less than quoted by the OP.

I don't see the DaVinci prices online, and don't wish to inquire about a purchase that I don't plan to make.

I do see several E-Bay special Chinese imports for < $1000. They may not last as long as custom attachments from established companies. However, they could be good "starters". See if it is actually a viable technology for one's needs. Of course, keeping in mind that the more expensive ones are likely better.
