1960 Carlton shifter boss bolt threading/size?
The frame came into my possession with only one shifter boss bolt. And this bolt has some kind of nonstandard threading. It’s close to 4mm but it is not. The folks at TLBS suggested that the brazed on shifter boss was too thin to tap the hole to 5 mm. Does anyone know the size/threading of this bolt? And..um...anyone have a spare to sell me?

congratulations on yet another very nice find!
since dropouts are Cyclo (England) wonder if gear system may have been as well...
unlikely i should think, but a possibiltiy to consider
would expect it to have come with a Campag gear ensemble
do not agree with person at TLBS who said there was not eno' meat to run a 5.0mm tap through
normal thread here is 5.0mm X .8
would think that if you ran a tap through "Robert would be your uncle"
on me workbench have a standard 5.0mm X .8 tap where i have ground down the pointed tip somewhat to turn it into a "bottoming tap" just for this purpose so there be clean threads all the way down to the tube
have you tried looking for pictures of this model as a complete machine to see how it was kitted ex-works?

Beautiful!! Yours might be like my 1960 Carlton Franco Suisse. I too wondered about the threading so just for fun I pulled a bolt out of this Campagnolo clamp on shifter and it threaded perfectly on both sides. Campagnolo was the catalog upgrade option on these bikes. Try Campy.

The color is much different from my 1975 Copper Raleigh International. Too me it’s slightly more red and a bit less yellow. You’ve now got me curious as to what it looks like in bright sunlight. Since I haven’t found all of the parts I need to build it I haven’t taken it outside. I’m going to do that tomorrow.

There is a thread on this one already that I don’t know how to link too and I haven’t updated in awhile. I’ll update it on the next couple of days.

So this story isn’t over yet. I realized yesterday that the bolt that works is not a Campy bolt but instead a 4.5 mm Shimano shifter bolt. The upside is I found bolts that will work yay! However, the mystery is not solved. Maybe the original bolts had whitworth threading and that’s close enough to 4.5 mm metric to work?
That Shimano shifter bolt in the dropout eyelet.
I continue to pursue this mystery as the eyelets for mounting mudguards on the dropouts take exactly the same bolts and I now need 4 of them! No luck finding a place to buy 4.5 mm bolts that are not Shimano shifter bolts.
