Fun read thanks for posting.
Interesting to read that the Proteus shop would go as far as brazing frames for other builders. Proteus frame at heart, but detailed by X. I wonder how many and who!

I remember Proteus from when I bought my first 10 speed (living in NOVA), but the shop sounded a little exotic to a young teen - plus it was located in College Park (U of Md) and I was a North Carolinian. All real ACC basketball came from my birthstate - wanted nothing to do with Lefty Driesell or anything UM related

Interesting article. I recently picked up a Proteus that showed up on the local Craigslist (Vancouver Canada). I'd heard of Proteus but had never seen one before. It's a nicely made frame and I really like the way it rides. In doing some research on Proteus, I found that they sometimes ordered batches of frames from outside builders, some in England including MKM and Steve Elsworth (after he left MKM). My frame doesn't look like the typical in-house Proteus, especially wrt the seat lug. I've confirmed that my frame was not built by MKM, and probably not by Steve Elsworth either. So that's one of the weird things about a Proteus - there may be no way of knowing who actually built it. More photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/577760...57715463736768

I grew up 5 miles from the Proteus shop but moved away at 10 just about the time they started building bikes. I really knew nothing about them until I found this one in Philly needing some work. I believe it was made by the original owner.
