I have just had an unfortunate crash riding a Scott S10.

I thought the bike had received minimal damage, and was planning on spending a few hundred dollars on repair. Unfortunately, the rear hanger was so badly bent it could not be straightened. On this bike, this item is part of the frame and non replaceable rather than be bolted on and replaceable.

Why would a bike manufacturer do this? My new bike, and the old one before the Scott, and most others that i have seen have replaceable hangers.

Is there some advantage to the NON repaceable hanger that over rides the many obvious disadvantages????

Probably a bit cheaper to manufacture. I won't buy a frame that doesn't have a replaceable hanger.

I lost a lot of skin, but nothing broken.

This was my first crash - and I don't mind saying that it shook me up a bit in terms of confidence. Every time I have ridden in the two weeks since, I keep visualising myself hitting the bitumen.

You could get someone to repair it, but I feel a new frame is in order. You can buy a frame for cheap, relatively that is. Cheaper if you already have the knowledge and tool set to do the parts swap yourself.

Non-replaceable hangers can make the frame lighter and the and hanger area stiffer, for better shifting.

If you really want to repair the frame - take it to a frame builder and he can gently heat the hanger until proper alignment is restored ...
