FWIW, after a cursory cleanup and putting the tires on I get the result below. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to relace the wheels as there is significant corrosion on the spokes...
The original spokes were chrome plated so the corrosion is most likely only in the plating, which tends to flake off. I recommend cleaning them up with steel wool or a Scotch Brite, if there is no pitting left after the chrome is removed they should be good physically if not cosmetically.
