I've never been a materialistic person except with bikes. A few years ago I started learning about cycling and car-free living. Once that happened, bikes have been a constant object of desire. Maybe it's a combination of finding bicycles beautiful, excitement and pride at the idea of self-powered travel, and an outsized feeling of freedom at the extra savings over what I spent on a car; for example, I realized I'd have to spend over $10,000 USD on a bicycle to match what I spent on an economy car over 5 years, without considering maintenance and the fun and fitness benefits that come with it.


So I'm planning to trade my current commuter-hardtail for a new bike (or two) in about ten months, and just wondering what everyone else's current n+1 dream is. I'm thinking low maintenance steel/alu+SS for my commuter, and Di2/SRAM 1x or Pinion for a big-tire traveler, like a Moots Baxter or Co-Motion Divide or Klatch. Part of the thinking is, if I go top-shelf at least once, I'll never wonder what I might be missing.

Co-Motion Divide Pinion is definitely lustworthy, and if I really wanted to I could buy one, but for $2200, a Priority 600 is more likely in my near future. I'll take aluminum over steel if it saves $4,200

After living by the n=1 ideal for years, I'm considering upgrading my only bike (steel gravel grinder) to a Salsa Vaya or Niner RLT and then transform my bike into a 1x10 flat bar commuter. Nothing fancy because I like to shoot for something I can actually afford (which Ultegra Di2 is not).

Being bikeless every time my bike is at the LBS or in transit (I have it shipped to my folks place when I visit them) is just torture.

I'm very curious how an Azub Max and Hase Pino ride. But I have enough bikes, so I won't but them. Renting/borrowing is enough. I found that for myself N=3.5 is the maximum (Which is where I am right now)

I've been thinking about a complete overhaul of my old touring bike for years now. I initially bought it for not a lot of money. It's been my daily driver and I've been updating bits and pieces on a budget since I bought it, entirely for practical and not aesthetic reasons. It works great and does what I need it too, but it's a pretty homely bike. (It's nice that I still get complements every once in a while from strangers who appreciate a nice old bike.)

It could look sooo nice if I stripped the old paint, had the frame rechromed, gave it a nice paint job, and built it up again with shiny alloy racks, leather saddle, nice bar tape, some nice-looking gumwall tires, the works... but every time I think about it, I talk myself down again. It's my daily driver after all. If I do all that stuff to gussy it up, and put all that money into it, 1) I'll be way more worried about it getting stolen and 2) The shine will fade again eventually anyway. None of that will make it better as what I intend it to be, a reliable vehicle to get me to and from work.

Sometimes I think I'd like a third bike (I have a beater, back-up bike, too, but it's hardly worth mentioning.) that is a little lighter, stiffer, quicker, sportier, but I spend very little time looking at new bikes and couldn't tell you what model I'd be interested in.

I lust for something that really isnt common- a 1x MTB with air fork for about $800.

I have all the road bikes I want right now and earlier in the year finished building my favorite one which I built the frame for too in a class.
I love my gravel bike.
I love my touring bike.

My MTB is too small for me and really old tech. Its newer components bolted to an early 90s Mongoose frame. It works fine since I am hardly daring when mountain biking, but I would like something that fits better.

I have my eye on a BD Motobecane and a Diamondback Sync’r. I like the Sync’r more, but am concerned the largest size will be too small. The Motobecane will be big enough, but I am arbitrarily petty and havent gotten over the name.

I dont ride enough MTB to justify an expensive bike, and really dont ride enough to justify a new bike at all, but I figure that when I do ride, I would like a bike that fits better.

New bike? I want lightweight bike that'll take wider-than-normal-roadie tires, which pushes me towards custom. Since I'd like a custom bike, it might as well have S&S couplers so I can easily travel with it, and may as well make it out of titanium. It's getting to be a once-in-a-lifetime bike, so go ahead and put a SON dyno hub on so I can use it for commuting, too. And may as well get Phil bottom bracket, the price difference isn't so bad given what I've already come up with. And maybe a high-end rear hub, and and and...

And after I look at the price tag, it's a beautiful day to get on one of the bikes I have and go for a ride!
